CARTER, Sr., Robert "Bob" James, 61, husband of Ovida H. Carter of Otrobando Avenue, Norwich, died at his home Friday, February 6, 2009 in the care of loved ones and Hospice. Bob lost an eye to ocular melanoma in 2005 and succumbed to liver cancer after a gallant effort. He was born March 22, 1947 in Norwich, the only child of Loretta O'Neil and the late John R. Carter. Bob was a lifelong resident of Norwichtown; graduating from Norwich Tech in 1965. He married his high school sweetheart, Ovida Horton, December 1965 in Lee Memorial Methodist Church. They spent most of their married life on Wauwecus Hill. He served in the Navy Submarine Service from 1967 to 1969 and was employed at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft as a toolmaker for 37 years. Most of his working years were spent on 2nd shift, so he enjoyed his days restoring and sailing his wooden sloop 'Christine C' out of Stonington Harbor. He was a life long member of the Norwich Fish & Game Club, recently hiked the Long Trail, and most mornings his '86 Fierro could be seen parked at Ayers Gap as he loved hiking their trails. He was a member of The Mystic Seaport for 35 years where he frequently wandered their streets and wharf enjoying the lure of wooden boats and the sailor's life. After retiring, Bob sold their home and moved onto his 35' Morgan sailboat 'Hakuna Matata', with his wife and their four cats. Together they sailed the Intracoastal Waterway to St. Augustine, FL. It was a slow journey that enabled them to linger and share boat stories as well as his knowledge and skill with many boaters soon called friends along the way; as logged on hakunamatatayellowboat.blogspot.com. They returned to Norwich to collect the grandchildren's hugs that were so dearly missed. In addition to his loving wife, he leaves his daughter, Christine Marie, her husband, Todd M. Jeffers, their two children and his son, Robert J Carter, Jr. He is the nephew of June Pendleton, the late Mildred Lathrop and was a friend to many, not only in Norwich but where ever he spent time. Services will be private. You may remember Bob with a loving donation to the ROBERT J. CARTER SR., MEMORIAL FUND c/o Dime Bank, 115 West Town Street, Norwich, CT 06360. Because of his endless energy and love of doing, Bob will be dearly missed, but not forgotten... Hakuna Matata.

HOWARD, Jr., Charles "Charley" Josiah, 81, passed on February 1, 2009. He was born July 24, 1927, in Emporium, Pa., to Charles J. Howard of Emporium and Mary Dodson Howard of Horseheads, NY. On June 6, 1944, the family moved to Brocton, N.Y., totally unaware that the Normandy invasion had begun. Later that year, as Charley entered his senior year of high school, he feared the war would end without him, so he doubled up on subjects to graduate early, joining the Navy in February, 1945. He met Dorothy "Dot" Jean Minshull of New Rochelle, N.Y., and after a brief courtship they were married on December 16, 1952. Their son and only child, John Charles Howard, was born September 26, 1953. The new family moved many times as Charley's Navy assignments took him to various locations along the east coast. While in the Navy, Charley's rating was electrician's mate, and he served mostly on aircraft carriers, although he transferred to submarines late in his career because Dot found out that submarine pay was better than sea pay. He retired as a senior chief petty officer at the U.S. Naval Submarine Base in 1967, after 20 years of service. Charley then went to work at Electric Boat as a sound and vibrations technician, analyzing and locating the source of submarine water- and structure-borne sound waves, a job he held until retirement in 1993. He also moved the family to Mystic in 1967 where they lived for the next 40 years. John left to join the Navy in 1975, but Charley and Dot were regular sights around Mystic, along with their dogs. His hobby was guns mostly, reading about them and, of course, shooting at the Groton Sportsmens Club. He also enjoyed reading books and especially poetry; his favorite poem was "Eldorado" by Edgar Allen Poe, and he knew many poems from memory. Charley rarely smiled for pictures, wasn't really fond of too many other people, yet he had a quick wit and good sense of humor and was a charmer with the ladies when he cared to be. When Dot passed away in 2007, Charley moved to San Diego, Calif., to live near his son, John, and spent the remainder of his days there. John and his wife, Hong, were at Charley's side when he passed. Besides his son, he leaves two sisters, Mabel Jones of El Paso, Tex., and Nina Ferguson of Olean, N.Y. He was predeceased by his younger sister, Rosemary. A Celebrant Service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, at the Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, 51 Williams Ave., Mystic. Per his wishes, his ashes will be scattered in Mystic.
