Local firm gets big Navy contract

Staff Report
DELEON SPRINGS — The U.S. Navy has awarded Sparton Electronics a $34.1 million contract to manufacture more than 40,000 sonobuoys at the company’s plant here, U.S. Rep. John Mica’s office announced today.

Sonobuoys are the Navy’s primary sensor for anti-submarine warfare. The Navy launches sonobuoys into large water areas to ensure no enemy submarines are lurking before U.S. fleets enter the area.

“This procurement of over 40,000 sonobuoys will play a vital role in both our local economy and our national security as we continue the war against terrorists,” said Mica, R-Winter Park, in a press release. “It is critical that we continue to provide our Navy with the necessary tools it needs to protect our service men and women, and I am pleased that the Central Florida defense community continues to play a major role in that work.”

The contract will provide for Sparton to produce two types of sonobuoys, which the company hopes to finish delivering in about two years.
