PAINTER, Orville Edward, 85, of Carrollton, IL died Thursday, February 12, 2009, at Boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton. Born August 6, 1924, in Wood River, he was the son of Earl and Jennie Lu Linn Painter. Orville graduated from White Hall High School in 1942, and attended Brown's Business College. He was in the U.S. Navy for 26 years, where he served on the first nuclear submarine the USS Nautilus. He also served on the USS Pogy and the Bushnell, among others, retiring as Lt. Commander in 1968. He then worked as an investigator for the Illinois State Police, was a Greene County deputy sheriff, and worked as the office manager for the Pratt Law Offices in East Alton for 10 years. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, member of the American Legion Post 70 for 63 years, and was also a member of the White Hall First Baptist Church. He first married Marjorie Spencer in 1945, then later married Elizabeth (Betty) Smith Parker in 1994, and she survives. Also surviving are three sons, Ronald (Sunny) Painter of Tulsa, Okla., Ernest Painter of Charleston, S.C., and Victor Painter of Arlington, Va.; and one daughter, Joy M. (Bill) Wood of Wichita Falls, Texas. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, Abby, Stacey and Christy Wood, Jason, Seth, Victor, Phillip and Taylor Painter, April Williams and Kristen Painter; three great-granddaughters, Nysha, Alyssa and Michelle Painter. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Eileen Havlin Grey. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall. Visitation will be held Sunday from 1 p.m. until time of services. Burial will follow at Belltown Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Belltown Cemetery.
