SANDERS, Richard, 77, died February 9, 2009. He was born June 3, 1931, the son of Robin and Anne; the brother of Gloria Walker; brother-in-law of Judge Stephen Walker; and father of Richard, Beth, Kaisa, and Judah. He has five grandchildren. As a young man he joined the Navy and served three years on a submarine. He had a special respect for the Navy as his father had served during both World Wars. Dick earned a bachelor's degree in English from Portland State and a master's degree in liberal studies from Reed College. His professional life reflected his respect for the power and beauty of words. During the 1950s and '60s he taught high school English, journalism, and speech - staying connected with some of his students for the rest of his life. Very aware of politics, Dick refused to sign the loyalty oath that was being requested from teachers during the McCarthy era. In 1965, he moved to California and became acting chief of public affairs for the California Department of Social Welfare, and executive secretary of the State Social Welfare board. His main role was to facilitate interaction between advocates of social justice throughout California, in the wake of the Watt's riots. Following this, he became Governor Pat Brown's speechwriter. After Brown was defeated by Reagan, Dick became an editor and writer for a series of 12 English and social studies text books. An Oregonian at heart, Dick moved back to Oregon in 1977 to become Governor Straub's speechwriter. These were happy years where Dick frequently joined political discussions with old and new friends. Over the past three years Dick researched and wrote the book "Portland State: A History in Pictures", edited by Professor Charles White with photographs by Brent Schauer. The Retirement Association of Portland State (RAPS) is the publisher of the book, and it will be sold in various bookstores in April. It is sad that Dick will not be there to see the finished copy. Selected photographs from the book will be displayed at Dick's memorial, which will be from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, at University Place, 310 SW Lincoln Street, Portland. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to The PSU Foundations for RAPS Book Account, P.O. Box 751, Portland, 97207.

Denny Kriebel [RMCM(SS)] was COB on Seadragon from late 1977 until we returned from Westpac in 1979. We had a few adventures together on that trip, and I learned a lot working with him.

Wish I could go to his services, but a scheduling conflict will keep me close to home next weekend.

Bon voyage, Shipmate. See you someday in Fiddlers' Green.
