STRICKLER, Jr., Grover Cleveland, 87, of Wadsworth, OH died Sunday, February 15, 2009. He was born May 8, 1921 in Madison, Ohio, to the late Grover Cleveland Sr. and Minnie Strickler. Mr. Strickler was a World War II Navy Veteran having served in the submarine service, was a graduate of The Ohio State University having received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1944, a life member of the OSU Alumni Association, a member of Tau Beta Pi, an Honorary Engineering Fraternity, a Bridge Life Master, was retired from PPG was a member of the Wadsworth Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow and an avid golfer. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Harriet Lowrie and Mildred Dean. Grover is survived by his wife, Rita Belle (nee Buchanan), with whom he celebrated 61 years of marriage; three sons and daughters-in-law, Grover III and Diana of Cincinnati, Gary and Amy of Midland, Mich., and Timothy and Kim of Wexford, Pa., and one daughter and son-in-law, Gretchen and Jim Clark of Denver, Colo. There are ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and his sister, Betty Gabor also surviving. The family will receive friends 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Hilliard-Rospert Funeral Home, 174 N. Lyman St., Wadsworth, where private funeral services will be conducted for the family. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to OSU Development Foundation,1480 West Lane Ave, Columbus, OH 43201, Hospice of Medina County, 797 N. RICHARDS, William G., 90, died in early January at the age of 90, in Sonoma, California. Born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, raised in Salt Lake City, he attended East High School and University of Utah, where he earned a degree in Mining Engineering. As President of the Sigma Chi fraternity, he was known as Cupcake. Bill attended submarine school in New London, Connecticut and served in the Navy as Lieutenant Commander on 13 war patrols in the south Pacific during World War II. Bill married Mary Alice Woolley in 1944. He enjoyed a 42-year long career with Ingersoll Rand Company. Bill is survived by his three siblings, Paul, John and Mary; his three children, Jill, Will, and Robyn; six grandchildren, Giancarlo, Avery, Marie, Gus, Ramona and Sam. He enjoyed the honor of being a great-grandfather to Khalil, Ayamila, and Siena Rose. He was lovingly called "Gramps" by family and friends alike. We will miss his wisdom, sense of humor and loving nature. Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at the U.C. Berkeley Botanical Gardens Conference Center on February 22nd, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. Inurnment will be with his late wife in Honolulu, Hawaii. YATES, William Kirby, CAPT, USN, Ret., 85, of Mystic, died peacefully on Sunday morning, February 15, 2009, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London from complications of the flu. Bill graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1947, and had a distinguished career in the Navy including command of the USS Snook, the USS John Adams, the Naval Submarine School in Groton, and Chair of the Dept. of Strategic Warfare at the Naval War College in Newport, R.I. Following his retirement, he pursued a 10 year career in civilian defense industries while also devoting himself to peace and justice concerns, including the Nuclear Freeze movement and Witness for Peace. A beloved member of St. Marks Episcopal Church since 1967, Bill was unwavering in his commitment to his church and community. He was a founder of the Memorial Garden at St. Marks and chaired their recent renovation campaign. He was a founding contributor and treasurer of the Mystic Flag Committee, as well as a founding contributor of the Mystic River Park. He enjoyed renovating his former home at 99 River Rd., in Mystic, and studied to become a Master Gardner in the process. Bill is survived by his wife, Pauline M. Yates, four children, Steven K. Yates of Peachtree, Ga., Mary Kirby Yates Gillispie of Santa Barbara, Calif., Kathleen B. Yates of San Jose, Calif., and John B. Yates of Washington, Mass.; as well as five adult step-children, sixteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held in his honor at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 15 Pearl St., Mystic.
