TAFF, Edward Joseph, 85, died Monday evening, February 16, 2009 at Saints Medical Center in Lowell. He was the husband of Virginia L. (Kelley) Taff, they had celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in September of 2008. Born in Lowell, September 8, 1923, the son of the late Edward H. and the late Mary A. (Mahan) Taff, he attended the Westlands School in Chelmsford and then graduated from Lowell High School in the class of 1941. Following graduation, he was working at the Electric Boat Company in New London, CT and attended the University of Connecticut. When World War II started, he joined the US Navy in the Submarine Service and became a Motor Machinist 1st Class. He served on the USS Lapon (SS 260) and well as several relief crews. He was awarded the Submarine Service Pin with 8 battle stars, the Navy Unit Commendation, The Asiatic- Pacific Campaign Medal with 2 battle Stars, the Philippine Liberation Medal with 2 battle stars, the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation, the American Theatre Medal, the China War Memorial Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal with 1 star. He was activated during the Korean Conflict and served aboard the USS Conger (SS 477) and received the Korean Service Medal, the Navy Reserve Medal, the Combat Service Commemorative Medal, the overseas Service Commemorative Medal, The Asiatic - Pacific Victory Commemorative Medal, the Cold War Victory Commemorative Medal and the US Navy Service Commemorative Medal. In 1983, Mr. Taff retired from distinguished 38 year career with the New England Telephone Company (now Verizon). His last assignment was as a Staff Manager on the General Office Staff in the Boston Headquarters. He was former member of the Telephone Golf League, and was a past vice president and shop steward of the International Brotherhood of Telephone Workers (IBTW) Local 9. Mr. Taff was a life-member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, the Lowell lodge of Elks # 87, the Walker Rogers post 662 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the US Submarine Veterans of World War II and the US Submarine Veterans, Inc. (Marblehead Base), and the Holland Club. He was a communicant and active member of St. Margaret Church. He served as an usher for many years and a s a member of the Holy Name Society. Besides his wife, Mr. Taff is survived by a daughter-in-law Mary (Medley) Taff of North Andover; four grandchildren Erin Taff, Shannon Taff, Meaghan Taff, and Robin Rosado; four great grandchildren, Vanessa, Jonathan, Justin, and Laina; four sisters Rita Comphor of Tucker, GA, Patricia David and her husband Clarence of Londonderry, NH, Jacqueline Reidy, Sandra Eagan and her husband Thomas all of Lowell; a brother Joseph E. Taff and his wife Nancy of Tyngsboro; and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Atty. Dennis E. Taff and the late Kevin M. Taff; and brother of the late Mary A. Taff and the late Lorraine (Taff) Donahue. TAFF In Lowell, Feb. 16, 2009, at Saints Medical, Edward J. Taff, 85, of Lowell, husband of Virginia L. (Kelley) Taff, Friends may call at the O'DONNELL FUNERAL HOME, 276 PAWTCKET ST. at Fletcher from 4 to 8 P.M. Thursday. His funeral will take place from the funeral home Friday morning at 8:30 o'clock followed by a Funeral Mass at ST. MARGARET CHURCH at 9:30 o'clock. Burial in St. Patrick Cemetery. GUILFOIL, Kenneth V., ENC(SS), USN, Ret, 79, of Groton and Orlando, Fla., passed away Saturday, February 14, 2009, in Florida. Ken served in the Navy from 1946 to 1966. He qualified in 1946 onboard the USS TORSK(SS 423) and also served onboard USS CUTLASS(SS 478), USS GUDGEON(SS 567), USS SPIKEFISH (SS 404), and the USS THOMAS A EDISON (SSBN 610). Ken retired after 20 years of service as an ENC(SS). Ken joined USSVI Groton Base in 1985 and he was a Life and Holland club member. Ken was married to the former Catherine "Kay" McCool and had one child, Michael Guilfoil, both of who predeceased him. Upon retiring from the Navy, Ken opened Associates Planning Services in Groton while simultaneously continuing to serve his community. Ken honorably served as a Member of the Representative Town Meeting in Groton. Visiting hours will be held from 2:00 - 4:00 pm and from 7:00 - to 9:00 pm on Saturday, 21 February 2009 at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St., Groton. All members are welcome to attend and the USSVI Groton Base Honors Detail will attend. The uniform, if you have it will be, USSVI Vest, Garrison Hat, Long Sleeve White Shirt, Black Tie, and Black Pants. The Honors Detail will muster at 3:15 pm and go on at 3:30 pm. Kenneth will be laid to rest at 2:00 pm on 25 February 2009, in The Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington, Va. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to Serenity Lodge, P.O. Box 1104, Groton, CT 06340 in honor of Kenneth Guilfoil.
