Actually that was a "fake leopard"; I didn't see any Tigers over there but I did see the "elephant"

Nah; it's just an expression that refers to "seeing the war; up close and personal"
According to one source it was used by enlisted soldiers in the Civil War.
"I've seen the elephant," or, "I'm off to see the elephant." Used to describe the experiences of war and soldiering, the term has many possible origins.
