At random: The USS NAUTILUS SSN 571 steamed 60,000 miles on a lump of Uranium the size of a golf ball. A diesel powered submarine would have required 3,000,000 gallons or 300 railway tank cars of oil.

SCHOONOVER, Charles Raymond, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday morning, February 17, 2009, after almost a 4-year battle with Alzheimer's Disease. He was born March 24, 1928 in Grove, OK, and raised in Mount Vernon, MO. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service in 1946 and served 5 years, including inactive duty. He graduated from SF College of Mortuary Science and served his internship in King City. For a change of pace he worked for Rawson Drug and Sundry Company in Emeryville as a Driver, then promoted to Field Supervisor. He returned to his profession of Funeral Director/ Embalmer at Oak Park Hills Chapel, Oakmont Mortuary & Cemetery, and retired from Hull's Walnut Creek Chapel. Charlie enjoyed the outdoors, especially family trips to Wrights Lake in the Eldorado National Forest, to San Diego area (his sister and parents lived there), and Black Rock desert trips with cousins and friends. Travels to different parts of the U.S. and a fantastic Caribbean adventure on a 77' sailboat were also the highlights of his life (he even caught a shark off the stern). Charlie loved his community and served it well - Little League and Hockey League Manager, Boy Scout Leader, panel member for school districts' yearly speech contests, conducted career seminars at Oakmont for local high school students who were interested in learning about the mortuary business, member of Walnut Creek Kiwanis Club where he was a President and also a Kiwanian of the Year recipient, and for 28 years a donor to the Diablo Valley College Victoria Jean & Charles Edward Schoonover Memorial Scholarship Fund providing funds for 29 transferring students. Charlie was a true gentleman and will be remembered for his kindness, genuine nature, unfailing sense of humor and wit, and above all the love he showed to so many. He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife and friend Martha of 46 1/2 years, his sister Connie Beam (Maurice), his daughter Kristina Bilyeu (Rick) and son Bill (Quinchel) and (children Victoria and Charlie who preceded him in death) and grandchildren Sarah Childers, Cynthia Bilyeu, Nicholas, Michael, Lexie, Nathan and Drew Schoonover and great-grandchildren Logan and Bradley Childers, plus fabulous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends who had the privilege of knowing this wonderful man. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, February 28, at 1:00 p.m. at Hull's Walnut Creek Chapel, 1139 Saranap Ave., Walnut Creek, followed by a burial service at Oakmont Memorial Park and Mortuary at 2:00 p.m. at 2099 Reliez Valley Road in Lafayette, after which a reception for family and friends will be held in the banquet room upstairs at the Back 40 Texas Barbeque, located at 100 Coggins Road in Pleasant Hill (this was Charlie's favorite place to eat for 30 years). If folks prefer not to attend the burial service, they may go directly to the restaurant - directions will be available in the lobby at Hull's If you so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to: UCD Alzheimer's Disease Center, 150 Muir Road (127A), Martinez, CA 94553 or Hospice of the East Bay, 3470 Buskirk Avenue, Pleasant Hill, CA 94523. Although we mourn Charlie's passing, and will forever feel an emptiness in our hearts because of his loss, we rejoice in the amazing and wonderful life he shared with all of us.
