DURLING, Sr., Ronald L., 68, passed away in Redlands, CA, on February 22, 2009. Ron was born in Redlands on September 24, 1941, and graduated from Redlands High School in 1959. He served in the Navy for four years and spent two of those years in the submarine service. Ron then became a Deputy Sheriff for San Bernardino County, obtaining the rank of Sargent. He retired after 25 years of service. Ron was a member of the U.S. Submarine Veterans and St. Adelaide Catholic Church. Ron is survived by his wife, Cynthia; son, Ron Durling, Jr. of Antioch, CA; daughter, Teresa Durling of San Francisco, CA; his father, Carlton of Redlands; and brother, Steve Durling also of Redlands. He is also survived by his 6 grandchildren. A Visitation will be held at Cortner Chapel, 221 Brookside Ave., Redlands, CA, from 5 P.M. - 8 P.M. on Wednesday, Feb. 25, with Rosary at 7:00 P.M. Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, Feb. 26, 1:00 P.M. at St. Adelaide Catholic Church, 27457 E. Baseline, Highland, CA. Interment will follow at Hillside Memorial Park in Redlands. Cortner Chapel is directin g services.

INGERSOLL, Jr., Winchester F. "Tom", 83, died peacefully on Saturday, February 14, 2009, at Grove Manor in Braintree, MA. Tom was born on April 10, 1926, in New York City, to the late Winchester F. Ingersoll and Hope (Garland) Ingersoll of Buzzards Bay. His childhood was spent on the family farm in Buzzards Bay, later he attended Milton Academy in Milton, and then Thacher School in Ojai Valley, Calif. Following in the steps of his six older cousins, in 1942, he joined the Navy and entered Harvard University, where he participated in the Navy's V-12 program, completing the officer's training and the full degree program in 2½ years. He then completed submarine training, receiving his honorable discharge in 1945 as the war ended. He subsequently worked for 29 years at the Harvard Cooperative Society in Cambridge. He was the husband of the late Nancy (Breen) Ingersoll to whom he was married for 42 years. He leaves his brother, Tudor G. Ingersoll of Buzzards Bay; nieces and nephews, Gretchen, Murray and Susan Anderegg and Eric, Carl, Sarah and David Ingersoll; and nine grandnieces and grandnephews. There will be a service at Grove Manor in Braintree. Interment will be at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to his educational institutions, to which he was particularly loyal.

HESSE, Walter J., 84, died suddenly Sunday, February 22, 2009, at his ranch in Cooke County. Dr. Walter J. Hesse was born April 4, 1923, in St. Louis, Mo., to Christian Viola Kammeier Hesse. He had been involved in high technology research and development for over 60 years. Dr. Hesse earned a BSME (1944), MSME (1948) and Ph.D. (1951) from Purdue University, where he lettered in baseball during his undergraduate years. Additionally, he studied at the U.S. Naval Academy where he was commissioned ensign (1944), U.S. Navy Reserve; attended U.S. Navy Submarine Officers School; University of California, nuclear engineering; and Sandia National Laboratories, nuclear weapons. During World War II, he served as an assistant engineer and electrical officer on board the submarine USS Blenny (SS-324). From 1949 to 1955, he held the position of chief engineer and chief academic instructor at the Test Pilot School, U.S. Naval Air Test Center at Patuxent River, Md., where four of the original seven astronauts were his students. Dr. Hesse served as vice president of Chance Vought Aircraft Corp. (renamed LTV Aerospace Corp.) from 1956-1973. He served as vice president of advanced transportation systems at Rohr Industries (1973-1977) and vice president of the Energy Technology Center at E-Systems (1977-1983). In 1983, Dr. Hesse founded Entech Inc., now known as Entech Solar, a high-technology solar energy company. At the time of his death, he was actively serving the firm as CEO emeritus and board member. Dr. Hesse published more than 100 technical papers and authored two college textbooks in the field of jet propulsion. Purdue University honored him with the Distinguished Alumnus Engineering Award (1966) and as Outstanding Mechanical Engineer (1991) and Outstanding Aerospace Engineer (1999). He served as board member, chairman and president of the Solar Energy Industry Association; advisory board of the U.S. Solar Energy Research Institute; a member of the scientific panel to the Congressional House Committee on Science and Astronautics; advisory board for Joint Task Force Two of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; and a member of the Texas Commission on Atomic Energy. Currently he was serving on the advisory board for the College of Arts and Sciences of the University of North Texas; board member of the Aviation Heritage Association of Fort Worth; and a member of the Fort Worth Air Power Council. In 1947, he married Bettie Sanford, and they were blessed with five children. In 1975, Dr. Hesse married Mary George Jones, and they have enjoyed raising and training thoroughbred horses on their Wolf Creek Ranch in Cooke County. He was an avid golfer and a member of Shady Oaks Country Club in Fort Worth. Survivors: Wife, Mary George Jones; children, Lonna Powell and husband, Milton, of Dallas, John W. Hesse and wife, Karen, of Battle Ground, Wash., Jan Lain and husband, Steve, of Flower Mound, Kris Loftis and husband, Steve, of LaGrange, Ky., and Stacey Schimpf and husband, Fred, of Cascade, Idaho; dearly beloved grandchildren, Jordan Powell and wife, Kimberlee, Logan Powell and wife, Cari, Carolyn and Jessica Hesse, Justin and Brad Lain, Corbin and Madeleine Loftis, and Ethan, Lawson, Jacob and Tanner Schimpf; brother, Alvin Hesse and wife, Bev, of Collinsville, Ill.; sister, Joyce Hartmann and husband, Bob, of Clinton, Ark.; and many loving nephews and nieces. Funeral: 11:30 a.m. Friday in Greenwood Chapel. Interment: 2:30 p.m. Friday in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Following the burial, a celebration of Walter Hesse's life will be held at 4 p.m. at Shady Oaks Country Club, 320 Roaring Springs Road in Fort Worth. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Greenwood Funeral Home. Memorials: May be made to the American Diabetes Association or a charity of choice.

Ron Durling, one of the old hands on these boards and a plankowner of INTERNET BASE (Lockwood Base).  I recall him well.  Rode Gudgeon, as I remember.

Sad to see that he has sailed on eternal patrol and know he will be missed by family and friends.
