AYERS, Kenneth W., 80, passed away on Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at home with his family by his side. He was born on March 23, 1928 in Providence, RI to the late William and Minnie (Dowding) Ayers. Ken was educated in Providence, RI public schools; he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1946 where he proudly served the end of WWII, and during the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts as a submariner engineman. He received various medals and awards and was Honorable Discharged in 1969 after more than 22 years of active service. He served his last 6 years aboard the USS Corporal (SS-346). Ken worked for United Nuclear as an inspector for 18 years until the company shut down. He was a Mason for over 25 years, belonging to Summerset Lodge #34, where he was Past Master and duel membership of Oxoboxo Lodge #116; he was Past District Deputy for the Grand Lodge of Masons in CT, Nemrod Grotto M.O.V.P.E.R. and as a 32nd degree Mason, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Award in June 1997. Ken was also a member of the Fleet Reserve Assoc. Branch # 237 in Niantic, Holland Club of the U.S. Navy Submarine Veterans and Senior Citizens of Norwich. In addition to Elsie, his loving wife of 45 years, Ken is survived by his five children, William Boyd of Norwich, David Boyd of Jacksonville, FL, Fay Lamothe of Griswold, Crystal Kyllo of Bozrah and Brian Ayers of Canterbury; his brother Alvah Ayers of N. Scituate, RI; 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter Florence Ann Beatrice; grandson, Edward J. Beatrice; sister, Audrey Hall and brother, Melvin Ayers. Calling hours will be held on Friday, February 27, 2009 from 6-8pm at the Church and Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem St., Norwich. A Funeral Home Service will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 10am; burial will immediately follow at Maplewood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice of S.E. CT, 227 Dunham St., Norwich, CT 06360 or the Alzheimer's Assoc., 279 New Britain Rd., Suite 5, Kensington, CT 06037. Please visit the online memorial at www.mem.com to post a tribute.

STOFFEL, Sidney M., 83, passed away at his home in Fallbrook, Friday, February 20, 2009. Born in Greenleaf, Kansas, on October 31, 1925, the sixth of 13 children to Pearl and Amelia Stoffel. Sidney attended Linn High School in Kansas, Submarine School in New London, Connecticut, and took police science courses at USC in Los Angeles, California. He was a veteran of WWII in the US Navy Submarine Service from 1944-46. He served 29+ years in the Los Angeles Police Dept. and retired in 1976 at the rank of Lieutenant. He was preceded in death, by his first wife, Donna Mae Stoffel. Married in 1948, they are survived by their three children, Greg Stoffel (Debi), Cyndi Stewart (Glenn) and Dawn Owen (Jim). In 1986, "Sid" married Betty Nordeen and lived happily together for 22 years in Fallbrook. Together they were members of the United States Navy League, The Vista Elks Lodge #1968 and Christ The King Lutheran Church. Betty Stoffel survives Sid along with two step- sons, Steve Nordeen (Janet), David Nordeen (Cathy); two sisters, Edna Mae and Javene; two brothers, Gene and Bob, 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He will be remembered as a loving husband and parent. A celebration of his life will be held at Christ The King Lutheran Church in Fallbrook at 11:00 am Friday, February 27, 2009.
