At random: During their wartime operations submarines have engaged in some unusual maritime actions. One undersea craft slugged it out with the infantry and field artillery while other submarines destroyed a zeppelin, a bus, and a railroad train.

Very interesting, Curt. It would be even more interesting to hear first hand reports of how this "marriage" is working out. I don't think you could draw any parallels to the Blackwater and Halaburtan companies, since the laws reagrding the primacy of the Captains authority of a ship is quite different than land based "semi-military" units.
Also... it would allow a discharged or retiring sailor to step into a higher paying job while remaining at sea. That would definately be a plus in this economy.
It would still be interesting to hear how the sailors and civilians interact. I wonder if this arrangement will spill over into other Navy support ships. Aren't some of our oilers already entirely USNS? It seems that this is the only way for the military to go without instituting a draft. But does it REALLY save money if the civilian crews are civil service and cost higher wages and benifits tha active military?

Very interesting.

My nephew is a career USN helo maintainance PO. He is now aboard the USNS Bridge, an underway task force resupply ship, which was decomissioned and turned over to MSC (old MSTS) a few years ago. I do not know how many regular navy are on his ship.

Another question; I know the current SSBNs are out of GA and WA; but, is there a tender to support them if they are deployed say to Diego Garcia?

If the Emory Land (AS-39) is in Bremerton, and the Frank Cable (AS-40) is in Guam tending Subron 15, what happened to the McKee (AS-41) that used to tend Subron 11 in San Diego?
