LEE, Harold "Buzz" Gordon, 91, son of Norwegian immigrants, passed away on December 22, 2008, in San Diego, California. He resided in San Diego since 1953. He was born in Luck, Wisconsin on August 19, 1917. Serving in the US Navy for 20 years as a submariner including participation in the "Battle of Midway," Buzz served on the USS Nautilus (SS-168) and received a medal from five-star Admiral Chester Nimitz in 1942 in Pearl Harbor for his heroic service as a radioman. He completed his military service on the aircraft carrier, USS Kearsarge. Self-employed in the electronics industry after his military service, Buzz was a life-long student of foreign languages and art receiving an Associate of Arts Degree from Mesa Community College at the age of 82. A travel aficionado, he was able to see most of the world in his lifetime. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Sandra Crane Lee, three children, Katherine Renner (Jackson) of Las Vegas, Nevada, William Lee of San Diego, and Hope Walton (Jim) of Las Vegas, Nevada, along with four stepchildren: Paul Dice (Annie) of Redondo Beach, Sheron Watkins (Ryan), also of Redondo Beach, Allen Dice (Barbara) of Denver, Colorado, and Catherine Dreger (Roger) of Los Angeles. Buzz also had 15 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. There will be a military memorial Service at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 6, 2009, at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery at Point Loma, San Diego.

STEIN, Walter Frederick, 83, died Friday, February 27, 2009, at The Kobacker House after a long six year battle with cancer. Walt was born April 15, 1925, in Columbus, Ohio. Enlisted in the U.S. Navy submarine service in World War II. Walt lived his life the way he taught those around him, with love of God, country, family and work. He was the founder of Clintonville service Inc. (C.A.R.S.) in 1962, where he served a president until his retirement in 1995. Walt also founded Central Ohio Gasoline Dealers Association (Cogda) of which he was a life member and served as president for 3 years. He also served as president of the Ohio Retail Gasoline Association. After retirement, Walt enjoyed owning several thoroughbred horses as a hobby. Walter was a faithful member of St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church for 66 years. He served as a deacon, elder and president of Church Council. He also was a Sunday School teacher and Scout Master of Troop 209 for 10 years. For the past 7 years, Walt was a member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church. Preceded in death by father Lester A. Stein, mother Orpha M. Stein and brother Lester E. Stein. Survived by wife of 61 years, Mary Jane (Searight) Stein; children, Lynette M. (Jim) Van Arsdale, Ronald W. (Melva) Stein, Penney A. (Roger) Beccue; sister, Sharon L. Campbell (Ralph deceased); grandchildren, David (Kerry), Kelli and Allison (Nikki) Stein, Ryan Beccue, Tiffany (Jason) Dunaway, Jeffrey and Heather Van Arsdale; great granddaughter, Gwen Stein. Graduate of Columbus North High School in 1943. Family will receive friends Monday, March 2, 2009 from 4-7 p.m. at WEIR AREND FUNERAL HOME, 4221 N. High St. (3 blocks south of Henderson Rd.), 614-268-3593 and 1/2 hour prior to 11 a.m. church service at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 2480 W. Dublin Granville Rd., Columbus, Ohio 43235. Pastor Jim Wilson officiating. Interment Forest Lawn Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish may contribute to Kobacker House, 3595 Olentangy River Rd., Columbus, Ohio 43214.

GAUTIER, Robert Henry, passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 3, 2009. Born in 1923 he grew up in Pascagoula, Mississippi, and after graduating from high school attended Marion Military Institute in Alabama before entering the U.S. Naval Academy in the summer of 1942. Graduation was in 1945 with the class of 46 due to accelerated courses during World War II. His wedding to Frances Arnold took place a few days later and they embarked on a 63 year honeymoon. After several years in the destroyers Bob attended submarine school in 1948 and began submarine duty in the Pacific fleet including a tour as a flag lieutenant and aide to Commander Submarine Force Pacific Fleet. Tours on the East Coast followed in Tang (SS 563), Trout (SS 566), and his first command, USS Conger (SS 477). Orders to new construction in his hometown of Pascagoula to the USS Blueback (SS 581) gave him his second command and a move to San Diego followed. Other commands were a division of submarines, the USS Montrose (APA 212), Submarine Development Group One which included a successful deployment to the Azores with the DSV Trieste II to locate and photograph the USS Scorpion SSN 589, Amphibious Squadron Six in Norfolk, Virginia, and then to his command of the Naval Undersea Center in San Diego, California, from which he retired in June 1975. After retiring from the US Navy, Bob worked as a consultant with Bendix Oceantics Division, Global Marine Development, Inc., Westinghouse, and Scientific Atlanta. He was the director of Lockheed Advanced Marine Systems, San Diego, California for several years. Bob's hobbies were wine making and deep sea fishing. He holds the world record for a 30 pound test line class with a 448 pound Giant Sea Bass caught in 1975. Captain Gautier is survived by his wife, Frances; son Robert, daughter Gayle (Gautier) Watring, and grandchildren Kari Gautier Simpson and Christopher Gautier. In keeping with his request, there will be no memorial service for Captain Gautier. His ashes will be scattered at sea from a submarine.
