At random: The United States submarine USS TRITON was fitted with twin reactors and was considered the longest submarine ever built until the advent of the OHIO class. The TRITON was designed for a surface displacement of 5,900 tons. Large submarines of other countries have been the Japanese I-400 (5,220 tons), and the French SURCOUF (2,880 tons).

ZACHARY, Joseph “Zack”, 66, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family. He was a devoted father and grandfather. His smile was never so bright as when he was with his grandchildren. He enjoyed home improvement projects and cooking for family and friends. Zack was born and raised in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the United States Navy, submarine service, and was stationed at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, Hawaii. He also served in the Vietnam War. Zack was honorably discharged from the Navy after seven years of service. He continued to serve his country at Pearl Harbor working for the U.S. Civil Service. He retired in 1990, after 30 years of service, as Chief Test Engineer for nuclear submarines - a job he loved and thrived in. He married Carolyn Hagopian on May 18, 1968. Together they had three daughters, Malia, Kina and Sara. Zack was preceded in death by his wife Carolyn. He is survived by their three children, Malia Mooradian and her husband Thomas, Kina Harris and her husband John, and Sara Balli and her husband Sergio; his grandchildren, Mikaela, Nicholas and Zachary Harris, Isabella Balli, and granddaughter-to-be, Malina Balli; his sisters, Ann Temple and Heather Macomber and her husband Hank; and his brother, Paul Zachary and his wife Sharyn, along with many loved nephews and nieces. Visitation will be held at Yost & Webb Funeral Home, on Wednesday, March 4, 2009, 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at St. George Greek Orthodox Church of Fresno, 2219 North Orchard, on Thursday, March 5, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. Interment follows at Masis Ararat Cemetery. HEMMELGARN Cyril "Cy" H., 85, of Columbus died Saturday, February 28, 2009 at Wesley Glen Health Care Center. Cy was born August 1, 1923 in Mercer County, Ohio to the late Leo and Catherine (Backs) Hemmelgarn. Retired Electrical Engineer with Ohio Bell Telephone Co. He was a longtime member of St. Michael Parish where over the years he was an usher, sang in the Resurrection Choir, served on the Parish Council and was a BSA Troop 123 leader. Cy was a U.S. Navy World War II Veteran USS Snook (SS-279) in the Pacific. He was a member of American Legion Leasure-Blackston Post 239, US Submarine Veterans of World War II, and Catholic War Veterans. He was also a member of Telephone Pioneers, Triangle Club, Columbus Maennerchor, and volunteer at Mt. Carmel Hospital. He is preceded in death by wife, Romana F. (Alexander) Hemmelgarn; siblings, Rev. Werner, Ralph, Arnold, Sr. Laurene and Louis Hemmelgarn. Cy is survived by children, Steven (Jenny) Hemmelgarn, David (M. A. Leonard) Hemmelgarn, Doris (Tim) Mercer and Susan (Jim) Wintering; grandchildren, Stacy Hemmelgarn, Matthew, Christy and Sean Mercer, Andrew, Scott and Michelle Wintering, Alex and Frannie Hemmelgarn; great-grandson, Brice Fought; siblings, Mary Kay Dondero, Esther (Ralph) Link, Robert Hemmelgarn and Ruth Miller. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 7, 2009 at St. Michael Church, 5750 North High Street, Worthington. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Friday with a Rosary Service at 7:30 p.m. at RUTHERFORD-CORBIN FUNERAL HOME, 515 High Street, Worthington.
