PETERSON, Axel John "Jack", 87, died February 22, 2009 at his home in California. A.J. or "Jack," as he was known, was born January 11, 1922, on Vashon Island, Wash., to Axel and Grace Petersen. He graduated from Vashon High School in 1940. Jack received his Bachelor of Science degree and Certificate of Naval Science from the University of Washington in 1944. He often said that he was in a hurry to graduate so he wouldn't miss World War II. He joined the Navy as an officer and served on the submarine USS Sea Devil (SS-400). After the war, he lived in the Seattle area before moving to Anchorage in the early '60s. Jack ran Arrow Lumber, "The Sign of the Arrow at Fireweed and Barrow," for many years, and opened one of the first Kitchen Design centers in the Northwest. He was involved with the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, city commissions and many other civic organizations. Jack and his family enjoyed many outings at their cabin at Big Lake. He taught his grandchildren to fish and played a mean game of Monopoly. They used this cabin often, even after moving from Alaska, until it burned in the Big Lake fires of 1996. After retiring, Jack and wife Nancy moved to Tacoma, Wash., where they lived at the Tacoma Golf and Country Club. Jack worked many hours on his golf game and poker skills while enjoying his retirement. Jack and Nancy loved to dance and at his granddaughter's wedding in 2007 still had the moves as they danced to "Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown." He is survived by his wife, Nancy; daughter and son-in-law, Colleen (Kelly) Faulkner and Dr. Bill Faulkner of Anchorage; grandchildren, Whitney Faulkner Eaton, Dr. Lindsey Faulkner McElligot, Hailey Faulkner and Jaime Faulkner; son and daughter-in-law, James and Laura Kelly and their children, Matthew and Madison of Vacaville Calif.; brother, George Petersen; and sister, Kaye Ward of Burlington, Wash.
