BRATTEN, Lloyd Olen, 83, died Saturday, March 7, 2009, at his home. He was born November 12, 1925, in Marion to Orvil Olen Bratten and Viola Geil. Lloyd was formerly a night supervisor at Turco Manufacturing in Du Quoin, owner of Brattens Ornamental Iron in Marion, a retired coal miner and a World War II submarine veteran[Skipjack, Sargo]. He was a member of VFW Post 513 in Du Quoin. He was an avid fisherman who enjoyed traveling in his motor home and boating. He married Dorthella Burroughs. She preceded him in death Oct. 20, 2004. Survivors include his son, Bruce Bratten (Marsha), of Du Quoin; son, Larry Bratten (Edy), of Du Quoin; daughter, Carlene B. Miller (Paul) Mills, of Goreville; son, Steven Bratten (Melody), of Du Quoin; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Carl Bratten of Marion. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and one sister, Leola Bratten. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 11, 2009, in Maplewood Cemetery in Marion. Memorials may be made to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale or Hospice of Southern Illinois in Marion. Walker Funeral Home in Carbondale is in charge of arrangements.

VOLK, Jr., Ralph Leonard, CAPT, USN, Ret., of Norfolk, Va., died March 7, 2009. Born in Wilmington, NC, he was raised in Pittsfield. He permanently relocated to the Tidewater area in Virginia in 1960. A Class of 1945 graduate of the Naval Academy, he was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. His 33 years of Naval Service included command of four Naval warships and two shore activities plus submarine duty and assignments to a NATO staff in France and to the CINCLANT joint staff in Norfolk. He leaves his wife, Leona, and their three children Vicki Holpe (Mark), Ralph Leonard Volk III (Sallie), and Larry Volk (Paula); five grandchildren, Michael, Brian and Andrew Holpe; Virginia Holmstrom; and Angela White, and one sister, Pauline Andreasen of Livingston, N.J. He was predeceased by his brother, Charles R. Volk. A Memorial Service will be Wednesday, March 11, at 10 a.m. at the Little Creek Amphibious Base Chapel. Visiting with family and friends immediately after the service at Chapel Reception Center. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association, to Navy Marine Corps Relief, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
