SCHOCK, Richard, a 13-year resident of Poway, passed away at home on February 13,2009 with his family by his side. He was born and raised in Lebanon, Pennsylvania , the youngest of three children born to Richard and Florence (Gates) Schock. Throughout high school Dick knew he wanted to be a chemist, and a scholarship to Temple University enabled him to achieve that goal. He earned his BA in Chemistry in 1940, and while pursuing a Master's degree in Organic Chemistry, he met a freshman student and future wife, Elizabeth Groom, of Philadelphia. After earning his Master's degree, Dick enlisted in the Navy as a "90-day wonder" and chose submarine service. Upon securing his Lt. j.g. rank and prior to leaving for the Pacific theater, he and Elizabeth were married in July of 1944. Immediately after a honeymoon trip to San Francisco, Dick joined the USS Guardfish at Pearl Harbor, serving as Radar/Electronics Officer for 5 war patrols. After the war, Dick completed the Doctorate in Chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania and joined the research department at Abbott Laboratories in North Chicago, Il. He became Head of the Organic Chemistry Department and later the Director of the Amdal Division of Veterinary and Agricultural Products. In 1969 he accepted the position of Vice President of Manufacturing with Cutter Laboratories in Berkeley, Ca. and in 1975 became Head of Cutter Biomedical in San Diego. After spending his entire career in the pharmaceutical industry, Dick took early retirement in 1981 so that he could pursue a lifelong interest in gardening and become a rancher. He set to work planting a 15-acre grove of macadamias, avocados, Fuyu persimmons and a family citrus orchard in Highland Valley overlooking the Wild Animal Park. After 15 years of tending his trees on steep terrain, painful knees convinced him it was time to slow down; a small garden surrounding a home in Silver Saddle, Poway, was the answer. Dick is survived by his wife of 64 years; sons, Stephen (Janice) of Poway, Robert of Lake Barrington, Il, John (Suzanne) of Libertyville, Il, and Peter of New Orleans, LA; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Relatives and close friends of Dick will celebrate his life on April 18. Donations to honor Dick may be made to the Elizabeth Hospice, Escondido, the Nature Conservancy or the Union of Concerned Scientists.
