At random: In World War II the Germans lost 782 submarines, the Japanese lost 130, Great Britan and Commonwealth countries lost 88 subs, Russia lost 110 submarines and the United States lost only 52 submarines. Twenty-three of the Japanese subs lost were victims of the American Submarine Service.

Totally non-submarine stuff...

Dug out some old photos and scanned 'em and put them into a
webpage format to easily pass along to some High School buds from
long ago.

Shown here are three from that collection.

They are from the Fall of 1952. Classmates from a high school whose
campus site from that time is now long gone --- a super shopping mall
resides on the site.

Just some pics of those whom I grew up with East of Cincinnati in
Forestville, Mt. Washington, Cherry Grove and environs. The school
was Anderson Township HS and the sports teams were the
ANDERSON REDSKINS. A name which in the past few years has come
under critical scrutiny of the POLITICAL CORRECT ZEALOTS. Don't
know if they made a name-change or not.

Anyway, I know. I know. Y'all don't know any of them. But if you come
from that era I betcha they remind you of kids you knew.

Maybe its me... but I swear the kids then looked more mature then HS
kids do now. Also everyone of the kids I knew had part-time jobs
during school (including all the jocks) and most had full time jobs in the
summers.

Back then a 16 year old could easily get construction jobs. It seemed
all of us had cars and drove them to school. Had to work to
pay for 'em.

Not very many fat kids then either.

Hard to believe so many years have passed.

Enjoy

Sid

The kid with the ballcap is me.

You are right. I don't seem to remember too many fat kids. We had a few that were "chunky" but nothing like what you see today. Sadly, I'm getting "chunky" too and need to do something about it. I lost a lot when I started dancing but it has come back this winter. I really felt last night at the dance. Got a Gym two blocks from me. Need to join and just do it. God knows I have the time now.

Those are great photos, Sid.  My daughter, Katie, took the time, when she was living with my Mother, to get all her "older" photos into a few albums...some of the photos, I hadn't seen in years...where has the time gone.

Ric, you don't need to join a gym...you have all that "space" around your development...just get up off the couch and go for a walk...I have started walking again, even if the weather is a bit "bad"...and it was at your persistence that I did get up off the couch and do it...so, BUD,
turnabout is fair play.

Well played, Ms Bumps! Well played.

Me thinks you'd've held your own quite well in the After Batteries of old.

Those kids in the picture could have been from Anywhere, USA. The garb on the girls made me yank out my class photo from the 8th grade (1957). The girls in my photo were dressed exactly the same. You're right about the physical maturity and weight of the group. I had been thinking the same thing for some time now. Even looking back at some of the old photos from the boat days the crew looked a lot saltier back then, although not a long time ago. (1960s). that may be due to having more older crew members from the WWII days and do I dare say smoking a lot. I can't help it but notice that heavier smokers just age earlier and may look older than their years. Back then a non smoker aboard the boat was a rarity.

I am walking but that is not taking care of what I want it to. I know from past experience what a gym will provide and what walking will.

Since we are talking FAT, Back in December when my Mother-in-Law was in the hospital, I couldn't help but notice all of the FAT nurses. There were a couple of rather plump Doctors but the Nurse far outweighed the Doctors. Now me being my slim and trim self shouldn't point the finger. It's not my fault that I married a wonderful cook---- I think I may need to rephrase that.
Kids in school are a bit more chubby, overall, than they were years ago. At the school where my Grandkids go, they are bringing back more Phys Ed and regulating the gedunk/ pogy bait machines.

Sid, I'd like to see some of my photos of both of you in
Charleston.

I think it's sub related...

OK Jack... here's a start
http://www.sid-hill.com/top/lohman/charleston_1966.htm

It's one that our kids had framed for us some while ago. Now I just
have to find the rest of the pictures.

By the way - its sugaring time. Some good NYS Maple syrup will soon
be coming your way.

---------------------

Here's an FYI for anyone... That Vermont syrup you buy... most of it is
boiled off from sap that is trucked across the line from here: the great
Northwoods of NYS.

And a bonus

Yup Steamboat,

Red, naturally curly hair.

We hit it off from the first date. She was teaching in Charleston at the
time. She shared a house with three other teachers. We met at a party there.
And apparently she thought I cleaned up real good.

Met in Jan of '66. I flew out for patrol that spring. And after a couple
days upkeep on my boomer in Holy Loch I picked up the phone in the
Control Room asked for an international operator and called her.
(Fortunately she was home) I popped the question and she said YES!!!

(A phonecon that was of course duly monitored by a half dozen smelly
shipmates with goofy grins standing around the QM plot table. Put a
lot of pressure on me.... but I was confident she would answer in the
affirmative.)

A very good homecoming to be sure.

She had rented a house for us on the Ashley River side of old
Charleston and had the wedding arrangement wheels in motion. All I
had to do was rent tuxes for me and the grooms men.

I had a motorcycle. She had a car. We combined our debts and
were good to go.

---

During WWII her daddy had been a uniformed Philco Tech with the
Navy at Willow Grove Naval Air Station, PA so the idea of dating a sailor
didn't scare her off.

Her mother said it was inevitable that she'd end up with a sailor.
Because when she was a little girl and they would take the train from
Philly to come home to Clemson (it was full of servicemen) she would
stand up in her seat and sing "Bell Bottom Trousers" to "the boys in
blue". Must have been a real Shirley Temple routine for the swabbies to
have that cute little freckled, red headed kid singing that song.

Grew up to become Miss Clemson and Miss Rock Hill and a contestant
in the Miss South Carolina contest.

Will be married 47 years this summer.

My how time do fly.
