At random: Traditionally, United States submarines have been named after fish and other marine creatures. One exception was the Navy's first submarine HOLLAND which was named after its inventor, John Philip Holland. Today, ballistic missile submarines are named for famous American patriots, with the newest class, the OHIO class, named after states. The LOS ANGELES class of attack submarines are named for United States cities. The nations news class of submarine, the Virginia class, is also named for US States, making them the capital ships of the navy.

May God Bless Your Family and Friends "Warshot" as they gather at Arliington Cemetery at this Hour to show their Love for you and Honor Your Life. I looked at the hour and knew it was the time for the services to begin - We all know what you gave us in Life and now we hope that we can show you at the beginning of "Your Eternal Patrol" the legacy being shown by your family and friends it was an "Eternal Love".
May your friends be your families "Comfort and Strength" "If You Give Love, You Get Love" and you certainly gave yours.

Having had the honor of attending, it was a very 'moving' service. Appropriate to a "T"! Well attended...
The reception following was wonderful as well.

Now as subvets, we'll honor St Patrick's Day this evening. Warshot would definitely approve of that.

AMEN, TO THAT, ROY!  It was an honor to have attended the Service for Ron and to meet his lovely bride Georgiana and their family.  KUDOS to Dex and Olgoat and everyone who made it possible for all of us to gather in a warm and wonderful setting.

And from those of us who could not attend,

"HAND SALUTE to Warshot's service and to all those who attended".

Job well done.

Though the day was gray and dreary, and a bit emotional, as I visited my best friend, Bob Finton, who is inurned in the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery, I was extremely honoured to have been able to attend the service at the Old Post Chapel and Ron's burial. And especially honoured to have attended the gathering afterwards.

I finally met Gil Raynor, with whom I've "spoken" for many years on Ron Martini's BBS, Warshot's fine wife and others, I was especially honoured to have met Dan Ashley, after many emails, and Kevin Mooney. Just by seeing him I would have been proud to serve under him.

In any event, I took many photos and am putting a call out to those who were at the funeral .. please send the photos that you took. Through the generosity of Joe Phoenix, I have blank CDs on which I can put not only my photos, but those sent to me. And to those who weren't able to attend, I will gladly send a CD with the photos from Warshot's funeral to you. Just let me know.

As the resident NQP, thank you for allowing me the privilege of attending today.

Thanks to all who are posting and sharing the events of the day. If not for starting a new job, I'd have been there in a heartbeat.  Looking forward to seeing photos of the gathered shipmates and friends.  Today, you all honored Warshot's passing, this evening, celebrate his life!  Warshot wouldn't have it any other way.

Hand salute Shipmate... fair winds and following seas from this day forward.

Don

Here are a few from the Old Chapel to the cemetery then to the reception. Perhaps some captions later?

The 'crew' is still celebrating his life this evening in a style in which I'm sure that he would approve! I have an early flight in the morning or I'd still be with them...

What a day, I am sure Warshot would have approved and be moved by the attendance.

As an outsider to your USN community, it was indeed an honour and a privlidge to have been in attendance today. The ceremony was moving and carried off by the Honour Guard with precision that you would all expect.

The function after was very nice as well. I met many a BBS Shipmate today, some from my 2004 trip across the USA ( Which is when I met Warshot with Dave Stoops at the Potato Patch - as members of Ron's family reminded me of the name ) and I met guys for the first time, so great to meet you all in person..

After this, we changed, then headed of to .......sheesh, how many beers did I have? oops, forgotten the name already! Anyway, a few beers were had, and more than a few stories were told, some true, some, well, you get the idea!

Oh, I was set up by some rascals....some woman came over to me demanding to know if I was going to be honourable and look after 'our' baby......Olgoat, and the others, you are swines of the highest order! lol...then she proceded to kiss me, those photos will NOT make the pages of this BBS as I know where you live and I have learned some new skills from being in a maximum security prison!

A great day was had, honouring the life of one of your American Hero's of WWII, as I said before, I am honoured to have been able to attend, thank you.

Blue *_*

PS. Art Smith, Silver Star, you are a great man and a great story teller....must be a Torpedoman/Fore-Endy for sure!

Blue understand this. You are a shipmate, not an outsider! You, POD and others from England or wherever earned your Fish. You have as much right here as any of us. Never forget you guys are part of a brotherhood that extends beyond borders - you are SUBMARINERS! (even if you say it wrong. )
I look forward to they day I meet each of you.

Good morning all...I will repeat what Blackbeard said...you are not the outsider, Paul...I am, for all intents and purposes, the outsider...but everyone has made me feel so warm and welcome.  The friendship that comes from being a part of this "family of men" who go down to the sea in ships and their families, has been, in one word...AWESOME!!!  I am so sorry that my Garry could not have been part of this wonderful celebration of Warshot's life.

Now, Blue...about those photos (< !!!

Well, the crew heading South by car is about to depart...Roy has already left for the airport...and I believe Mad Dog will be leaving shortly.  All in all, this has truly been a very wonderful experience.

Hey you guys over at the Snake Ranch...are you alive yet???

The service was well attended by a representation of the submarine community. It was my honor to attend and very moving.
I shot video of the ceremoney and will try and see about getting it on You Tube when I get home.

I've been up since 7. the "Goat" finally surfaced about an hour ago. Blue stumbled down and is attacking a bowl of cereal.

"Swines of the Higest order" Aye. We that were present resemble that remark and title with very heartfelt pride. Since I was standing next to Blue when this lovely young lass came between us and asked Blue, "Where the f*&#@ have you been?" before she mentioned the baby, I would like to say that a deers eyes in the headlights doesn't even begin to describe the look on his face. And a "kiss" doesn't describe the lip lock she put upon him. Such a lovely young lass she was.

Blush??????? Why, that youngster lit up like the beacon on a fire truck. Eyes were so wide and round he looked like an Owl.

As this month draws to a close and we shudder at what new virus will erupt on 'April Fool's Day', I'm reminded of Saint Patrick's Day and the great gathering in Arlington to celebrate the life of my friend, Ron 'Warshot" Smith. What a great privilege to be there! Ron's body had departed about six months earlier however his spirit was among us. We did our best to 'do him proud'! And the "we" was a super group of shipmates and friends, both old and new. I'm so grateful to have had this opportunity to meet so many that I only knew through the BBS circuit and to renew with so many from earlier exposure. I know better than to attempt to list their names at my age, CRS don't ya know. Thanks guys & gals for the comaradarie!

Roy, you can just refer to all there as the world famous, "Swine of the Highest Order". Yes, I think Ron "Warshot" John Smith would have been in the middle of the group wearing hip waders and a brew in each hand.

I explain what happened to folks as a week long Wake for Warshot. The thought of "...Warshot would have loved this..." kept coming up as we laughed and got nasty and down right bad. I watched Ray Stones' Torsk Work Weekend Video again last night and the part toward the end when Warshot came walking down the pier and later was signing his book for those who bought it brought a smile to my face.
