BATTENFIELD, Willard E. "Bat", passed away in Broken Arrow, OK on Saturday March 14, 2009. He was a long time resident of Choutau, OK, but had moved recently to Broken Arrow. "Bat"' operated Choutau Fence Company for over 30 years and had served in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service during World War II. He was also a Pearl Harbor survivor. "Bat" was born in Barnsdall, OK, October 31, 1921 the son of Arthur and Zara Battenfield. "Bat" is survived by: his wife, Juanita Battenfield of the home; 2 sons Gary Battenfield and wife, Pam of Broken Arrow and Glen Battenfield and wife, Raye Jeanne of Choutau; 3 grandchildren, Stacy and Walter Gibbs of Fayetteville, NC, Kyle Battenfield of Broken Arrow, Casey Battenfield of Choutau; and step-grandchild, Paige Wagner of Broken Arrow, Kirk and Amy Roberts of Pryor with 2 children, Diane and Rod Rabon with 5 children of Oklahoma City, 3 great-grandchildren, Lauren, Tyler and Sydney Gibbs of North Carolina. Funeral service will be held 3 p.m., Wednesday, March 18, at Floral Haven Funeral Home Chapel, Broken Arrow, OK. Interment will be in Floral Haven Memorial Gardens, 252-2518.

KEETON, Afton, a devout Catholic, an honored serviceman, and World War II veteran who loved his country dearly, passed away on March 15, 2009 and is now at peace with his heavenly Father. He was born in Sherman, Texas on June 16, 1921 to Edward Marshall Keeton and Rosa Davis Keeton. Afton will be missed by his family and friends. Afton will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and love of life. He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Frances L. Keeton; his son, Karl Keeton and his wife Kathryn; step-daughters, Sharon Otto and husband Richard and Marilyn Casella and her husband Ronald; grandchildren, Travis Keeton, Craig Casella, Cynthia Casella-Kennard, Debbie McCrory, and Dr. Richard Otto; great-grandson, Ryan McCrory; great-granddaughters, Kristina Kennard, Samantha Kennard, and Kaitlin Casella; his dear sisters, Mattie Costella and Ethel Brooks; his niece, Donna Boone and her husband Nicky and Beverly Graumann and her husband Freddy, all shared a special place in his life. Afton joined the military in 1942 and honorably served our country for 30 years both in the Navy and the Marines, while a recipient of the bronze star. He served on four different submarines during WWII, a destroyer during the Korean War, and completed two tours in the Vietnam War. Afton was honored as the acting National Commander and acting Chaplain for the WWII USS Clamagore Veterans Association. He was the Texas State Commander of the WWII Veterans Submarine Group and was blessed to be a part of this distinguished group of gentlemen. Being a religious man that loved his Church, St. Louis Catholic Church. Afton was a past president of the Parish Council and a valued member of the Knight's of Columbus 4th Degree #5967. He was an honored Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator during his time with the Knights of Columbus. Afton was a volunteer for Seton Medical Center and always wanted to help others. Also, Afton participated in the Alhambra Organization and was the Caravan Commander while he resided in Chicago. Afton was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Lydia Keeton, his brothers Roy, Ernest, and Edd, and his sisters Vera, Ruth, Susie, Thelma, Mildred, and Gwendolyn. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Austin-Peel and Son Funeral Home, Inc. with the Rosary to be recited at 6:00 p.m. all on Wednesday March 18, 2009. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Louis Catholic Church and interment will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Louis Catholic Church.

WILLS, Richard “Dick”, 66, passed away March 9, 2009, in Elko, Nevada. He was born October 10, 1942, in Sacramento, CA, to Benjamin & Pauline Wills. He married Nancy M. Wacker on December 4, 1967, in Sacramento, and their marriage was later solemnized in the Los Angeles Temple. Dick served in the U.S. Navy nuclear submarine service where he learned his leadership and electrical skills. He continued on to work as an electrician and instrument technician with Phoenix Cement Plant in Clarkdale, Arizona, and later with Barrick Mining in Nevada. While in Arizona, he was active in coaching and serving in various youth sporting programs, he was an avid Mingus Marauder fan, and he served as a Cottonwood City Councilman where he was instrumental in developing their first community pool. His hobbies included his grandchildren (school, sports, music, dance, and spoiling), collecting Boy Scout paraphernalia and books, church service, and over 40 years as a Boy Scouts of America volunteer in various positions, most recently serving on Eagle Scout Boards of Review in the Elko region. As an adult Boy Scout Leader, he received several Awards of Merit, an Order of the Arrow Vigil Honor, Woodbadge, and the Silver Beaver award which is the highest service award for Council volunteers. Dick had recently attended U.S. Naval Reunions, reconnecting with his fellow submariners. His passing reunites Dick with his mother and father. Dick is survived by his wife, Nancy; his sister, Kathleen Wills, of California; daughters Lisa (Craig) Gibson of Texas, Mary (Dennis) Zimmerman of Elko, and Laura Wills of California; sons Tim (Jann) Wills of Arizona and Kevin Wills of Texas; grandchildren: Samantha, Jessica, Marshall and Richard Gibson; Stacey, Melody, Treavor, Braeden & Christine Wills; Katy, Asa, Benjamin and Sophie Zimmerman; Kase Wills; Carly Brannon; one great-granddaughter, Noel Chavez; and numerous other family members as well as many, many great friends and neighbors. Services will be held on Friday, March 13, 2009, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3210 Sagecrest Drive (located off Mountain City Highway). There will be a viewing at 10 a.m. followed by a Chapel Service at 11 a.m. with a graveside service at Elko City Cemetery. Donations can be made to the BSA Bristlecone District Campership fund on behalf of Richard Wills at Elko Federal Credit Union.

BOWYER, James Byron, 60, of Perkins, OK, died on Saturday, March 14, 2009, in Tulsa. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday in Immanuel Baptist Church in Perkins with the Rev. Robin Foster officiating.James was born on February 16, 1949, in Stillwater, the middle son of Marvin and Dovie Bowyer. He married Carma Berryhill in 1969.The Bowyer family moved to Perkins in 1957 where Jim and his brothers, John and Jack, attended school. Jim graduated from Oklahoma State University and received his degree in 1970. He joined the Navy in 1970 and, after basic training, served on the USS Corporal and the nuclear submarine USS Sam Rayburn. After honorable discharge, he received his master's degree in trade and industrial education from OSU.Jim taught in Bartlesville, Caney, Kan., Eureka, Kan. and Cushing, where he earned the reputation as a concerned and caring teacher helping students through their problems individually. Jim had a full and interesting life, centered around family and enjoying his children. Recently Jim and Carma returned to Perkins, where they built a home on the family property. Jim took pride in designing and building the cabinets for their new kitchen with the help of his son. He enjoyed the close ties that he shared with his brothers and being involved with their families.He is survived by his wife, Carma and two children, Shawna and Christopher. Shawna resides in State College, Pa., with her husband, Bill Culp; they are expecting their first child in June. Chris resides in Stillwater. He and his wife, Cathey, have a daughter, Cali, l4 months old.
