At random: In their history, submarines were called by many names such as 'eel boats', 'plunging boats', 'devil divers', and 'pig boats'. Technically, and by size, the submarine is a ship, but it has been called a boat since its earliest days, and the term is steeped in tradition. Submariners almost invariably call their ships 'boats".

Whitey Lockman, the New York Giants outfielder-first baseman who set the stage for Bobby Thomson’s pennant-winning home run against the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1951 and who played in two World Series at the Polo Grounds, died Tuesday in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was 82.

I was 10 years old at the time of the 'shot heard round the world' and caught the end of the game on the radio after school. I heard Whitey's hit to drive in Dark and then Branca came in to relieve Newcomb.....and as we say the rest is history. A great day for NY Giant fans who hated the Dodgers!!!

RIP Whitey

This is really sad and his accomplishments will always be remembered.  I was but a "babe" when this piece of history occurred, but have heard many numerous stories about where "we" all were when this momentous occasion happened.

Joe, we missed you this week...and hope that the next time we all get together will be under different circumstances.
