SHAFFER-Charles William "Chuck" Shaffer(1956-2009) and Renee Clarice (Kreslie) Shaffer (1960-2009) Passed away in a Pomona airplane accident in their beloved Piper Dakota on Saturday, March 14, 2009. The couple married in 1994 aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach and spent every moment of their time together loving each other, traveling and visiting with family and friends. They were soul mates. Charles was a brilliant, technology-loving "Big Kid." Renee was a fitness-minded, loving, intelligent mother who loved listen ing to KFI's Dr. Laura and reading books. She was a rare person who could manage to keep up with Charles. They were always planning a vacation and traveled the world together. Charles was born at UCLA on November 12, 1956, and was preceded in death by his parents Jack Bishop Shaffer and Janet Christine Saye. He is survived by sisters Jacqueline Shaffer Parker of Anchorage, AK; Llana and Marsha Baldwin of Ventura; Cindy Collins of Rocklin; and Mariee Shaffer Southard of Laughlin, NV. He was preceded in death by sister Patricia Charlene Baldwin. Renee was born on November 2, 1960 in Redlands and is survived by her parents, Arnold J. Kreslie of Barstow and Dorothy E. Masnjak of Los Angeles; sister Audree Seltzer of Sommerset, NJ; brother Louis Kreslie of West Covina; and sister Aimee Martin of Lexington, MI. Charles grew up in the Redondo Beach area with his aunt, uncle and sisters before rejoining his mother in Azusa during high school. Both attended Gladstone High School, but did not meet until later in life w hen introduced by Renee's sister, Audree. Charles was a member of the class of 1976 and a varsity football, soccer and track team member. Renee (then Hightower) was active in Speech and Debate and was the Class of 1978 Achievement Award winner in Business. Charles joined the Navy in August 1975 where he served as a submarine sonar technician on the USS Dallas, USS Tautog and USS Indianapolis. He retired from the Navy in August 1982 after being stationed in Vallejo, San Diego, Pearl Harbor and Connecticut. A fter returning to California, he worked for Honeywell in Covina. In 1985 he moved his family to Upland and started Cornice Software, a Macintosh computer dealer and software developer. After high school, Renee got her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from University of Redlands in 1990 and earned her MBA with a concentration in Finance from University of La Verne in 2001. She also became a CPA and worked in the finance departments of several different companies including California Busi ness Interiors and Pacific Business Interiors. In the early nineties Chuck and Renee started Netsense, a San Dimas internet provider and computer/accounting consulting company. Netsense allowed them each to work for several different companies in finance and technology capacities, and begin the semi-retired travel lifestyle they desired. They were both success stories, coming from meager means to become successful. Both were eager to start families early and had five children from previous marriages that th ey regarded all as their children equally. They are survived by: their daughter Meleisa Shaffer Mendonca and her husband, Aaron of Canyon Lake; their son Jeremy Hightower of Upland; their son Joshua Hightower of La Verne; their daughter Gillian Shaffer of Tucson, AZ; and their son Charles Shaffer III, his wife Briana and grandson Charles IV "Caleb" of Queen Creek, AZ. A celebration of their lives and reception will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 21 at Glendora Community Church, 645 N. Grand Ave. (at Sierra Madre), Glendora. They loved to fly and knew the risks: They would want everyone they know to never hesitate to follow their dreams and take more vacations. Earlier this month, the couple helped teach a group of high school students interested in aviation. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to La Verne chapter of the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) Young Eagles program.
