At random: USS SKATE and USS SEADRAGON, after affecting a historic rendezvous under the ice, surfaced together at the North Pole through an opening in the ice on August 1962. What really happened: We didn't surface together, Skate surfaced first. Then we (Seadragon) fired yellow flares forward and aft so Skate could tell us how we were lined up. Remember, under-ice was primitive in these days. Skate called back down rapidly that one flare surfaced on her starboard side and the other to port. She requested we reposition before vertical surfacing. We did. - Coyote (Owen Carlson)

 Ric,
I posted that video last year around this time.  Then it contained a soundtrack "COLD WATERS", that made the video extremely moving (12MB).  Too bad they had to remove that.

Sailors, Rest Your Oars.

Thanks Paul. I agree, the music does add significantly to the film.

When Thresher was lost, I was on her sister ship, USS Barb SSN-596. We were scheduled for fast cruise when Thresher was lost. Sublant or some othe command had us blow our tanks alongside the dock from 4500 psi to 1500 psi. The morato valves were covered with ice upon completion. It was then that it was known that the 593 class boats were not capable of recovering from a casualty at depth. The ASR stated they heard a short blast of air(About 1 second) and then the breaking up noise.

In July we went on Alpha trials but were restricted in depth as were Plunger and Permit and the following boats.

We left Pascagoula in August 63 for the west coast. The boat was built so badly by Ingalls, Frame 40 around the Mess hall area tore loose from the hull. We spent 9 months in Mare Island in what was called, A rebuild. We did not get the Subsafe package.

I always felt if it had not been Thresher in the Atlantic, It would have been Barb in the Gulf of Mexico.

It was a shame that Thresher had to be lost to find the 593 class boat was a poor design.

I think the best designed Fast Attack at that time was the Sturgeon class that was Ray.

As a result Flasher became the first Fast Attack to be built from scratch as SUBSAFE. We were never depth restricted though many sister boats were.
