Did you catch the NBC Evening News last night with Brian Williams and the section about taking video of returning dead and wounded troops? They showed a video of the troops off loading the flag covered caskets and discribed it as a very somber ceremony. The military troops were wearing BDU/pajamas that were doing the "ceremony". This does tend to piss me off just a tad. You'd think that for a somber ceremony honoring our fallen troopers they would at least wear a uniform to show respect and not some ragged, baggy, field uniform.
Another scene showed US Marines in their dress uniforms receiving the fallen troops a few years ago. That is how it's suppose to be done. What has happened since then?
What a bunch of losers our military commanders have turned into. For me to respect them, they should show some respect to those fallen troops and also show respect to the relatives of those deceased men and women by putting forth a little effort and wear a decent uniform.

Ralph,
I saw the photos yesterday and had to take an extra day to try and be objective about the uniforms. Cammies with white gloves! I couldn't agree with you more that the uniform should be dress uniform. I'm pretty sure the non military/non veteran doesn't see this as an issue. They should though. I wouldn't classify your post as a rant. Your sentiments are well taken as an observation and a personal feeling that I'm sure, or hope, many of us agree with.

I saw the same footage on Fox news and experienced the same reaction.
BDUs with white gloves just ain't right for a ceremony of this magnitude.
In fact it's downright disrespectful. You're right Ralph some of our illustrious leaders should remove thier heads from thier arses.

I'm cranking out letters to both of my Senators and Congressman today.
White gloves and BDUs are a real kick in the ass to a man or a woman that gave up their life for this country. Dover AFB Command are nothing but Slackers. What a disgrace.
Can ya tell I'm still pissed?

Along with this rant, I'll add my pet peeve on a related subject.

What ever happened to wearing a dress uniform on liberty, while traveling, etc.? Over the last several years, I've seen Army and Marine types wearing cammies/BDUs in town and in airports (can't speak for USN or USAF).

I realize that it's wartime and all, but whatever happened to looking like a Soldier/Marine on liberty?

Marines have reversed the trend (about a year ago I think) and Marines are no longer allowed to wear anything but Class A or Dress Blues when off the Base. I still travel quite a bit in the midwest and South and only see U.S. Army travelling in Camo's.
The Marines I encounter, when I fly to North Carolina, are all in Greens or Blues. I haven't seen a Sailor in an airport in a long time; I suspect most of them are travelling in civvies.

I worked in a mall in Manhattan Beach Ca. and we used to have a lot of Air Force personnel visit at lunch time. You would see a lot of cammo's. Also one of my favorite shows to watch in the morning is the game show "The Price is Right". Since Drew Carry has been the host there have been more military personnel as contestants. The Air Force wears their blues, (class A ?), the Navy wears their dress blues, the Marines wear either their dress blues or the khaki but the Army is always seen in the digital cammo BDU.
When I was a kid you always saw a person in the military wearing their uniform. Now it seems they can't wait to get off work and change into something civilian. It's kind of sad.

... at least locally, here in Tucson.

W.R.T. army personnel: do the run of the mill grunts even have a dress uniform any more? That's a bit of a facetious question, but the only instance I can think of where service dress is obvious is when you see them in ceremonious circumstances - Old Guard at Tomb of Unkown, color guards, etc. Otherwise its camo.

Here is a copy of the letter I sent to Senator Lindsey Graham, Jim DeMint and also to Rep. Henry Brown. Feel free to use all or part of it if you want to light a fire under your Congress people.

Honorable Graham,
My purpose in writing to you is in regards to the now filming of our dead and wounded service men and women arriving to the U.S. at Dover AFB.

Last night on NBC News with Brian Williams, a video was shown off loading flag draped caskets of our recently deceased military. What is very disturbing to me is the uniforms worn by the military personnel doing the unloading. Although they were being respectful, I would think that a more appropriate uniform should be worn for this ceremony.

These deceased troopers gave their lives for this country and we should show them, their families and the American citizens the most respect possible and that would include a dress uniform for this ceremony.
BDUs/Utility uniforms are a field uniform and to be right frank they look like crap for an occasion like that. They also look like slept in pajamas when out in the public. What happened to our proud military?

I served in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service for a number of years and had pride then and now for the service I did. You were U.S. Air Force and you should know about pride also.

Please look into this for me, the deceased military, their families and this country. Let’s get some pride and respect back into our military.

Sincerely,

Ralph R. Luther

Well, the digital cammies/BDUs are, by definitian, a uniform; just not a Dress uniform, so I guess that that meets the criteria.

Yes Tom, you're right. There are uniforms for garbage handlers to wear when collecting garbage and there are uniforms for rolling around in the dirt doing Rambo type stuff. Carrying our deceased troopers demands better than that and I'm certain you agree.

I agree 100%. I would prefer to see the escorts in dress uniforms. However, the question now becomes "Have BDUs/cammies now become de facto "dress" uniforms." If so, I'm 100% against that.

Seems like it for the "ground pounders". You see them wear those pajamas everywhere. Maybe it's the Rambo wannabe image they are trying to promote.
