At random: "Again I ask, who really are our Hero’s? They are the men who have, since the first day of our great country, left their families and friends and gone to war asking for nothing and giving all." -- Gary Walker

I have been emailing with my cousin in Finland and we have been helping each other out with family history and genealogy stuff. We can figure out family names back to 1700 but from there back is is real fuzzy.

Now, he just got word that the family originally (under the name Roukus, still are family named that) left Sweden in 1275 or maybe it was 1225, the person wasn't sure of the date. That is 900 years!

I can't even get my head around something like that. How do you figure out who these folks were and that they are related to you?

Thanks for the heads up John. Of course we all go back 900 years plus....

But can you place your relatives back that far with a family name and to a location and and an event they were involved in? For most folks it is 2 to 3 generations max and that is it. Can't even name names back beyond that. I know I couldn't before this.

Ric....

Did you know that Rodney Dangerfield was a Suomalainen (Finlander to you non Finns!)

His given name was Rauno Vaarapelto (vaara="danger" and pelto= "field" ) but he Americanized it when he became a movie star/comedian.

Some people may tell you that he was born Jacob Cohen, but the truth of the matter is that his father changed his Finnish name,Jaakko Korhonen,to Jacob Cohen when he came to the U.S.

There is no need to do any research on this. There is nothing to be gained by confronting me with facts.

Hey, have you looked into this?

The Swedish-Finn Historical Society. They are homeported here in Seattle. As soon as I get all the family stuff together I'm going to drop in on them and give them the family scoop.

Ric,

You may find out you're related to Hagar the Horrible! Then you'll have to go around wearing cows horns sticking out of your ears!!

Thanks for posting that link Ric, I'm really curious to check it out. I am into genealogy, and have fleshed out a large volume on my family, but now I'm trying to look into my wife's family tree and have been a lot of difficulty with the Finnish side. I hope I can get some leads from that site! Thanks again.
