At random: Robert Fulton, inventor of the steamboat, was an avid submarine enthusiast. He built several submersible warships, one of which was known as the Nautilus.

Has anyone heard from Claudia lately? For you new comers, Claudia's brother, James Richie, was aboard Thresher. She use to hang out with us on these boards but has been absent for few years now. She posted under the name "Baby Sis".

Pro-pay is in reference to there pay grade. Some rates like EM, MM, ET and others had different pay levels within the garde. There were ET2 and then ET2P1 for ahigher level of geekness generally found within the nuclear section.

Pro-Pay = Proficiency - Pay It was something paid to entice you to remain in the service after all the considerable training you had been given. It was meant to off set the higher pay you could receive if you left the service and got a job in the civilian world. This was mostly in the Nuclear and Electronics rates. There was also huge sums paid to certain rates for shipping over. Into the tens of thousands of dollars at the time I was in the service.

I received P3 as an MT1SS. Anything helped support the lavish military life style of a 20 something married guy.

Tom,I also drew P3 as an MT1(ss)
It worked pretty well when I was single
but it all went to hell when I contracted
out to a surrogate spender (my ex wife)

" Contracted out to a surrogate spender." I like that Paul. Excellant way to describe marriage.

I see you just couldn't get away from DamNeck. Did we ever cross paths as we seem to be of similar vintage. MT"A" from 7/63 to 1/64, MT"C" from 7/65 to 2/66 and MT"B" from 3/68 to 9/68. During the latter part of the 1990s the Prez of my company's Mother-in law owned the Peppermint Lounge in the 60s. I told him I contributed to their children's college education.

It was actually related to your 4 digit job code than a specific rating.

Must have crossed paths. We went to A-school and C-school at the same time.
I also made a large donation to the Peppermint Lounge during those years

Pro Pay began in 1962. I was a RM1 in RM "B" School in Bainbridge, MD. Radiomen were eligible for the higher pay. Every one who was eligible went and took a test which was very similiar to a promotion exam. Depending on your score, you either failed (no pro pay) or if you passed you could get either P-1 ($25 per month), P-2($50 per month), or P-3($75 per month) depending on how high your passing score was. I lucked out and got the $75 per month. I have no idea how long I drew that amount. I never went and took another test, but I made E-7 the next spring, and that probably ended it...
