WILKINSON, Gene L., 69, passed away Saturday, April 11, 2009 at St. Mary's Hospice House, following a brief but valiant battle with lung cancer. Gene will be remembered as a loving husband and father, a multi-talented artist and designer and a dedicated servant of his church. Gene was born in Lafayette, Ind., and raised on a family farm in nearby Oxford. He served in the US Navy on submarine duty, and upon his discharge, completed a BA, MA and Ed.D. at Indiana University. It was there that he met his wife, and in 1973, they relocated to Athens with their two young daughters. Gene was an associate professor in the College of Education at UGA from 1973 until his retirement. Gene will be missed at Friendship Christian Church where he was a member for 35 years. He will also be missed in the art world where his exquisitely carved wood sculptures had received awards and prizes too numerous to mention. The family wishes to express their thanks to the staff of ARMC and St. Mary's Hospice staff and also to loyal friend, Jim Kean, whose help allowed Gene to continue his travels on the art show circuit as his health failed.Gene is survived by his loving wife of forty years, Sandra; daughter, Rebecca, and future son-in-law, Jim Watts, both of Annandale, Va.; and daughter, Sara of Athens. He was preceded in death by his father, K. Marvin Wilkinson. Survivors include his mother, Mary Ruth; sisters, Jane and Ruth; and brothers, James, Robert and Thomas. A memorial service will be held at Friendship Christian Church on Wednesday, April 15, at 10 a.m. The family will greet visitors following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Friendship. Lord & Stephens, WEST, is in charge of arrangements.

LOVETTE, James Edward, 83, died Saturday, April 11, 2009. He was born March 20, 1926 and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in World War II on a submarine. Arrangements by Hartsell Funeral Home.

WHEELING, James Thomas, 87, passed away on April 11, 2009. He was born on April 24, 1921, in Winston-Salem, N.C., to the late Thomas Aaron and Addie Dawn Wheeling. In 1941, at the beginning of WW II, James enlisted in the U..S Navy and volunteered for submarine duty. He was assigned to the USS Spearfish in the Pacific Fleet. During the battle of Corregidor, the USS Spearfish rescued 13 nurses from the island and took them to safety in Australia. James served on numerous ships, one being the USS Ommaney Bay, which was sunk by a Japanese suicide pilot. After the war, he led drill teams at Bainbridge, Md., and San Diego, Calif. His team participated in the Eisenhower Inauguration Parade. During the latter part of his career, James served as a nuclear weapons officer and retired from the U.S. Navy in 1970 as a CW04. He then entered the civilian work force and was employed by the OEO (Office of Economic Opportunity) and the Virginia Employment Service. Upon retirement from the VEC, he became a 20 year volunteer for SCORE, as a counselor to America's Small Business. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Newport News for 50 years; a member of the Bithynia Sunday School Class, the United Methodist Men, and served on many committees during these years. Also, he was a member of the Retired Officers Association, the U.S. Submarine Veterans of WW II, the Masonic Lodge, the National Sojourners and the Heroes of '76. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Julia Dawn and Lynn Leslie. Mr. Wheeling is survived by his wife of 64 years, Erleen; two daughters, Susan Kahl and Karen Cromer; two sons-in-law, David Agee and Bob Kahl; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two sisters, Lorean Parham and Kathleen Hayes. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at Peninsula Funeral Home and from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, April 17, 2009, at Salem Funeral Home in Winston-Salem, N.C. Burial will follow in Salem Cemetery with military honors. A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 20, 2009, at First United Methodist Church in Newport News. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cancer Research Association or the First United Methodist Church, Newport News. The family wishes to thank the nurses, therapists and assisting personnel of The Gardens at Warwick Forest ,for their compassionate and loving care of our James. ASKINS, Laurence Leo Askins, 79, of Grand Rapids, passed away Sunday, April 12, 2009. He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Marie Askins; brothers, Bernard, Joseph, Thomas and Rev. Robert Askins; sister, Josephine Snook. He is survived by his loving family who came first in his life; wife of 58 years, Madelyn; children, Linda (Michael) Walker, Laurie (Thomas) Krebill, Leslie (Robert) Rosenbach, Lisa (Melvin) Shepherd, Louise Stormzand, Lizabeth (Kevin) Fegan, Margaret (Tony) Krenselewski, Maureen (Michael) Finn, Matthew Askins; son-in-law, Michael Stormzand; 21 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Faith, family and friends were the most important things to Larry. He was the owner of Briggs Electric for over 30 years, a member of the Navy serving on the submarine USS Piper (SS-409) from 1948-1952, a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Central Hall of Fame as well as an active parishioner at St. Thomas of the Apostle Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Thursday, 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 1449 Wilcox Park Dr. SE, Rev. James A. Chelich, presiding. Interment Resurrection Cemetery. Vigil service Wednesday 8:30 p.m. Visitation Wednesday 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. at the O'Brien-Eggebeen-Gerst Chapel, 3980 Cascade Rd. SE. GLAVIN, Richard Patrick, 89, died April 2,2009. Dick was born December 23, 1919 in Medford, MA to parents John and Anna Glavin. The family later relocated to Kearny, NJ where Dick completed high school and joined the Navy. He served in the Submarine Service during World War II on the USS Snapper (SS-185) and USS Cobra (SS-245). In his later years Dick became very active in the Submarine Veterans of WW II and the International Submarine Veterans Association, holding offices and planning events. Following his military service, Dick worked in the newspaper printing industry as an electrotyper, sterotyper, and pressman. He retired in 1986 from his last employer, The Hayword Review. Dick was an avid football fan and loved traveling the world with his loving wife Edith, including Europe, Southeast Asia, and 27 trips to Hawaii. He will be remembered fondly for his big and hearty laugh and his Irish brogue. Dick is survived by his wife of 51 years, Edith, 87; son, Shawn Glavin of Scottsdale, AZ; daughter, Ann Powell of Discovery Bay, CA; daughter, Dr. Karen Anderson of Seattle, WA; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Helen Bugglin of Dover, DL; and brother, Jack Glavin of Chicago, IL; as well as many nieces and nephews. At his request no services will be held; a Naval burial at sea will be arranged at a later date.

LAW, Paul Wilkerson, 70, died Easter Sunday, April 12, 2009, in his residence. He was born June 5, 1938, in Middlebrook, a son of the late Robert S. and Mary "Johnny" (Wade) Law. After 20 years with the US Navy, Paul retired as a Senior Chief Machinist's Mate (Submarine Service), having served on the USS Pawcatuck, USS Thornback, USS Abraham Lincoln, USS Hammerhead, and USS Alaxender Hamilton. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve. Following his military retirement, Paul was employed by Law Well Drilling with his father and brother. He was employed by Fisher Auto Parts while attending Blue Ridge Community College where he graduated with a degree in mechanics. He was later employed by the City of Staunton, prior to retiring as a mechanic. Paul was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, the Men of the Church, and McClure Sunday School Class. He was currently serving as a Deacon, and was known as a Mr. Fix-It when needed at the church and in the community. In addition to his wife of almost 31 years, Jane (Hawpe) Law, of Staunton, family includes his children, Emma Beth Law Gutzler (Michael), Mary Kate Law, Deborah (Law) McGill, Dale Law, Paula (Law) Mott, Theresa J. Layne (Steven), and Tracey J. Markowich (David); a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; four brothers Robert W (Jackie) Law, John S. (Shirley) Law, W. Franklin (Diane) Law, and Benjamin T. (Brenda) Law; and a sister, Mary Ann (John) Anderson. A funeral service will be conducted 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, 2009, in the Bethel Presbyterian Church by the Reverends Joel P. Thornton, Clifford D. Caldwell, and Robert R. von Oeyen Jr. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, 2009, in the Henry Funeral Home and at other times at his residence. MORRIS, Frank A. passed away April 12, 2009 at Aultman Hospital after a fall at his home. Born September 24, 1921, he was a lifelong resident of Malvern. Mr. Morris was a United States Navy veteran assigned to Submarine Service during World War II. Mr. Morris was employed by Hercules Motors in Canton for his entire working career. He was preceded in death by Catherine E. Morris, his wife of 60 years. Frank is survived by a son David L., of Minerva and a daughter Carol J. of Washington Crossing, PA. Also surviving are a son-in-law, two grandsons, a great grandson and a great granddaughter. Graveside services and interment are being held privately at Bethlehem Cemetery. HUDSON, Irving Lynn, 85, passed away January 26, 2009, in Tucson, Arizona. He was born to Sharon and Mable Hudson, December 16, 1923, in Lambertville, Michigan. He graduated from Bedford High School in 1942 and enlisted in the Navy the same year. He was assigned to the submarine USS Bream (SS-243) where he served as an electrician. He was very proud of his time on the Bream and enjoyed traveling to the reunions to see to his fellow crewman over the years. Upon his discharge from the Navy he returned to Lambertville to work in his father's business, Sharon Manufacturing Co., until he retired in 1985. In 1990 he and his wife, Janice moved to Tucson, Arizona There he enjoyed playing golf and hiking in the Catalina Mountains. Left to cherish his memory, his wife, Janice; son, David (Joan) Hudson; daughter, Cheryl Sexton; grandchildren, Dave Hudson, Ryan (Kira ) Hudson, Craig Sexton and Heather Sexton; great- granddaughter, Lauryn Hudson; stepson, Robert (Dee) Kalb; stepdaughter, Bonnie (Peter) Goes; three step grandchildren, James (Kelly) Kalb, Jeffrey Kalb and Justin Kalb; step great-grandchildren, Grace Marie, Bryce Lewis and Reece Jacob Kalb; sister, Lorena Paschen; two brothers, Sharon and James Hudson. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Charles and Paul, and sister, Ruth Bentley. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Irving Lynn Hudson will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 4030 Douglas Rd., Toledo, OH, on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to offer memorials are asked to consider, Casa de la Luz Hospice, 400 W. KLEINMAN, Don Walter, 83, passed away April 11, 2009 of causes incident to old age. He was born on December 19, 1925 to D.C. and Ellen Kleinman, in Mesa, Arizona. He married Fae Dunsdon on September 7, 1948 in the Salt Lake Temple. He was a patriot who served valiantly as a submariner in the US Navy. [Torsk, Toro, Thresher] He loved life, his country, his church and his family. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Lynn (Julie) Kleinman of Orem, and Dean (Mildred) Kleinman of Phoenix, 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the Windsor 1st Ward, 1505 N. 145 E., Orem. A viewing will be held Tuesday, April 14th, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Anderson and Sons Mortuary, 49 East 100 North American Fork, and Wednesday at the church from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the services.
