At random: The first Japanese prisoner of war captured by the Americans was Kazuo Sakamaki, an ensign in the Imperial Japanese Navy. He was captured on the morning of December 7, 1941. Sakamaki had set an explosive charge to destroy his disabled submarine, which had been trapped on Waimanalo Beach. When the explosives failed to go off, he swam to the bottom of the submarine to investigate the cause of the failure and became unconscious due to a lack of oxygen. Sakamaki was found by a Hawaiian soldier, David Akui, and was taken into military custody. When he awoke, he found himself in a hospital under American armed guard. After the war he returned to Japan and found work with the Toyota Motor Corporation before retiring in 1987. Sakamaki died on November 29, 1999, aged 81.

Max Shean is a Gentleman of the Highest order who as his daughter indicates will soon be crossing the bar, a wonderful man who lived well with honour and will be sadly missed.

Being in X Craft didn't qualify him as a Submariner albeit I'm at a loss as to why not so we awarded Max Honorary Live Member of the Submarine Association of Australia to which he humbly replied "do you think I qualify?"

Received the attached note from Ruth Shean today.

Dad isn't going to get better. They have suggested further surgery but he has declined. He's currently writing the last bit of his memoirs but he's unlikely to be able to write too much more. He will soon have some morphine and then slip away quietly - probably over the next few days. Thank you for all your prayers, love and support.

It is always so difficult to see family, friends and shipmates slip across the bar. Condolences, POD, to you, your country, Shipmates and of course Max's family.
HAND SALUTE!!!!!

Sorry to hear of your countrymen's illness, POD...the loss of another sailor from WWII (no matter which Navy), is one of the greatest losses any country can endure.
They are leaving faster now...and it's very, very sad.

Any X Craft sailor deserves dual dolphins. I agree with your lack of understanding of the failure to award dolphins. YOU DONE GOOD to make him a life member.

Thank GOD for men like him. Don't know where the world gets them but they don't come any better.

May the Lord hold me close and he be accepted for he served his tenure in the most trying of tasks.

May fair winds and following gentle seas await Max Shean on the other side of these troubled waters...
