- (Bakersfield Californian)
KIESEL, Ogden Miles "Corky", 68, passed away in his home on April 14, 2009 after a long, hard fought battle with multiple myeloma. A fifth generation Californian, Corky was born on March 15, 1941 in Berkeley, CA to Ogden and Emma Miles Kiesel. He grew up in Lafayette, and as a youth he distinguished himself in many areas. He was an honor student throughout his school years, became an Eagle Scout at the age of 13, and held multiple national records for age group swimming, some of which stood for more than ten years. Corky graduated from Acalanes High in Lafayette in 1959; the following year he enlisted in the US Navy where he served his country for six years as a missile technician aboard the nuclear submarine, USS Robert E. Lee (SSBN-601). He made nine patrols into the north Atlantic and became a naval "Polar Bear" when the submarine passed under the Arctic Circle. In 1967 Corky was honorably discharged from the Navy, married the former Sandra DeMartino, whom he met while stationed in New London, CT. He enrolled in Cal Poly, SLO and received a degree in Business Administration with a specialty in Accounting in 1970. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. After graduation Corky and Sandy moved to San Jose where he took a position with Arthur Anderson and Co and became a CPA. He and Sandy started their family with the arrival of Mark in 1970 and Lori in 1973. In 1973 Corky left public accounting to accept a position as CFO and Sr. Vice President with Pandol Bros, Inc. in Delano, and the family moved to Bakersfield. In 1991 Corky joined the firm of Option Care which later became Optimal Health Services. He held the position of Sr. Vice President and CFO until health problems forced his retirement in 2003. Corky was dedicated to his career and was usually one of the first to arrive at the office in the morning and the last to leave in the evening. He was deeply saddened when his career was cut short by health issues. Corky worked hard, but he also knew how to have fun. His interests were many and varied. He had a private pilot's license, read voraciously, was a self taught computer whiz, and over the years pursued activities as diverse as scuba diving, archery, and astronomy. Corky had a great love of the outdoors, and some of his favorite pastimes were fly fishing trips with friends, family, and business associates, family ski trips, backpacking trips with his children, and golfing trips with Sandy and friends. In 1991 Corky fulfilled a childhood ambition and became a ham radio operator. Less than a year and a half later, he had earned the "extra" level of license, the highest level of license granted by the American Radio Relay League. He made contact with other "hams" in all 50 states and over 200 countries. Corky will be remembered for his keen intelligence, his incredible work ethic, his love of fine food and wine, and his dry sense of humor. Corky was preceded in death by his parents, Emma and Ogden Kiesel. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Sandy; his son and fiancée, Ogden Mark Kiesel and Daina Moore, of Bakersfield; his daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughters, Lori, Dennis, Kaitlyn, and Rylie Head, of Holden, MA; and his brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Susan Kiesel, of Corning, CA. The family wishes to thank Msgr. Craig Harrison for his spiritual support and the following health professionals for their loving care of Corky: Dr. Dean Davis and Dr. Vinh-Linh Nguyen and their staffs, the Alternative Care staff, especially Carrie Walker and Darlene Kiner, aid Benny Ruiz, and the entire Optimal Home Health and Hospice teams. Memorial donations may be made to Optimal Hospice Foundation, 1315 Boughton Drive, Bakersfield, CA 93308. A memorial service will be held at St. Francis Church on Friday, April 24, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. Ogden Miles "Corky" Kiesel 1941 - 2009
