At random: The USS NAUTILUS SSN 571 steamed 60,000 miles on a lump of Uranium the size of a golf ball. A diesel powered submarine would have required 3,000,000 gallons or 300 railway tank cars of oil. |

Yeah, we call them......'Dolphins', as we actually depict Dolphins as our Qualification Badge....funny that! *_* And for those that don't know, we don't differentiate between Officers and Enlisted....we all wear Gold Dolphins. Blue *_*

COMSUBBBS Posts: 2540 Location: Wappingers Falls, NY | Subject: RE: Dolphins question Darrin, Paul has the closest answer. The origin of the Dolphins is of the dolphin fish, which were the attendents of Posieden, so I am "assuming" that it would be Greek in origin. You can check it out at http://www.jcs-group.com/military/rank/sub.html. There is a whole long story about them. The dolphin pin dates back to June 13, 1923.

Great Sage of the Sea Posts: 602 Location: Visalia, Ca. | Subject: RE: Dolphin's Names I recently got an email from one of my Alumni Associations. It was a story about being asked on a Qual Board for the specific names of the two dolphins on the pin. The correct answer was "Castor and Pollux"(the Gemini Twins from Greek mythology). I had never heard or read that before. Can anyone here verify that, and/or provide a reference?

COMSUBBBS Posts: 2540 Location: Wappingers Falls, NY | Subject: RE: Dolphin's Names Donald, that could very well be a "truth" as Caster and Pollux are supposed to be the patrons of sailors.
