(31, 73, 125);">Just received this in my USSVI official news....I can understand how the crews of our SSN's & SSBN's can put on the poundage while underway, what with the good chow and sitting around doing zero physical exercise....unlike us  DBFer's who worked like dogs all the time underway, thereby not allowing our skinny bodys to grow any access fat cells.

(31, 73, 125);"> The U.S. Navy is taking advantage of having too many sailors, byraising standards. Four years ago, it revived emphasis on passing the annualphysical fitness test. For six years before that, the navy had lightened up onthat, especially the weight (or, rather, overweight) rules. The navy eased upon the fitness rules in the first place, because it appeared that too manyotherwise well qualified sailors were being forced out. But commanders believedthat out-of-shape sailors were a risk to themselves, and everyone else, on theships they serve. Just getting around all the ladders and confined spaces of aship is physically demanding, and can be a matter of life or death during combat.

(31, 73, 125);"> The fitness issue is tough. Navy food is generally quite good, and many sailors these days work at sedentary jobs. Moreover, the workschedules don't leave much time for hitting the gym (most ships have anexercise room.) However, the navy has more people than it needs, and hasdecided that physical fitness and willingness to work for promotion are twoways to decide who, among people otherwise qualified, shall stay and who shallleave.

(31, 73, 125);"> Sailors got the message, and currently 95.9 percent pass thesemi-annual physical readiness test, and very few sailors have a problem withweight. But now the navy is going to come down harder on sailors that fail thephysical fitness test. Promotions will be harder to get if you are not fit. Thenavy is putting particular pressure on senior NCOs, who are the ones mostresponsible for getting junior sailors to shape up.http://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htatrit/articles/20090317.aspx

You're right about the jobs now that are less physically demanding. My sitting in front of the Launcher Panels for 6 hours led me to be creative. We had a set of dumbells hidden in the workbench. I used to do chin ups using the pipe runs although at 6'3" I had to fold my legs which, in hindsight, was a good thing. Sit ups and push ups were accomodated as well as isometric excersizes. All in all it made the time pass. It was also helpful not to eat at every meal. I always managed to lose whatever I gained during off crew althogh now I'm paying the price for the yo-yo weight changes. The Doc told me I've conditioned my body to store fat and it sure does. Now I can gain weight from the amoebas in the water and the vegetables in the air called pollen. My wife says otherwise and I don't argue too much. Never argue with a Sicilian you've been married to for almost 42 years.

On the DB I weighed a strapping 165#. Went to the FBM's for 3 patrols and ballooned up to 210#. During that time I quit smoking and fell in love with the ice cream machine while on patrol. Couldn't hardly walk past that thing without drawing a drinking glass full of ice cream. I was fwd-aux most of the time and that machine was one of my pride and joys.

We called those guys "hatch plugs". You always knew when they were coming or going because the air pressure changed in the boat as they passed through.

You married Sicilian??
You deserve some sort of medal for valor, my man!

(Note: please do NOT tell your lovely bride I said that! I do NOT want a knock on the door some night from Salvatore 'Banana Nose' Leonardini.)

She does have three brothers who you would not buy a used car from. Two are retired FDNY officers and are pretty mellow now. But the sleeping elephant can be awaken.
