At random: The first submarine which actually sank another enemy vessel under combat conditions was the CSS HUNLEY built during the Civil War. The Union frigate HOUSATONIC on blockade station off Charleston, S. C. was the victim. The incident occurred on February 17, 1864.

MOORE, James W., 48, of Factoryville, PA died Saturday April 25, 2009 at Moses Taylor Hospital. Born in Levittown, son of the late Lawrence S. and Violet Joy Propst Moore, he was a graduate of Neshaminy Maple Point High School, Langhorne, and attended the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science. He served in the Navy for five years in the submarine service as a Russian linguist. Before his illness, he worked for MetLife Insurance Co., Clarks Summit. Surviving are a daughter, Jennifer Lynn Moore; a brother, David R. Moore, Clarks Summit; a companion, Judy Albert, Clarks Summit; and an aunt and uncle, Jessie and Leonard Wearne, Reading. A memorial service will be Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Robert E. Decker Funeral Home, 702 River St., Peckville, with the Rev. William G. Carter, pastor of Clarks Summit First Presbyterian Church, Clarks Summit, officiating. Friends may call from 6 until service. Interment, convenience of the family.

ZINK, Bernard A., 95, passed away peacefully at home April 25, 2009. Born March 17, 1914, in Lorain, Ohio, to George F. Zink and Helena (Thesing) Zink. Bernard left home with a note from his mother allowing him to join the US Navy when he was 17. He was a submariner based in Hawaii when he met Ann. They began their married life in 1936 by traveling with the General Motors Parade of Progress through the U.S., Mexico, Cuba, etc. They later made their home in New York, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, Berkeley, Los Angeles, and San Francisco before settling in Sacramento. A mechanical engineer he specialized in diesel and turbine power generation systems. He was an excellent horseman and played polo for many years. After settling in Sacramento, he began a long history with St. Philomene's Parish (from the days of Msgr. Twomey and Sam's Brau Hof). Bernard was active in the Holy Name Society, St. Vincent De Paul Society and many committees within the parish. He attended daily Mass and served as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector. Bernard was a devoted member of Secular Discalced Carmelites and helped found the Auburn Community of Discalced Carmelites. He counted many Carmelite Priests, Sisters and Brothers and OCDS members as friends. Bernard was preceded in death by his beloved wife Ann; precious daughter Barbara; brothers, Raymond, Edward, Charles; and sisters, Helen, Alberta, Theresa, Colletta. Survivors include his sons, Bernard and Jonathan; daughters, Patricia, Mary, Helen, and Lorretta; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. The family would like to especially thank grandchildren, Dwayne, Fr. Eric, Marie and Bernard, and great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Rickey for the love and concern shown to our father over the last few years. Many, many, thanks to Mercy Hospice who made it possible for our dad to remain at home with us until his passing. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to: Carmelite Sisters, 6981 Teresian Way, Georgetown, CA 95634. Visitation will be 3:00-7:00pm Thursday April 30, 2009, at Lombard & Co. Funeral Directors, 1550 Fulton Avenue, followed by Rosary at 7:00pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, May 1, 2009, at 11:00am at St. Philomene's Church, El Camino Ave and Bell Street, Sacramento. Interment at Calvary Cemetery.
