He was born on March 25, 1920, in Fall River, Mass., to the late Richard M. and Alma (Deslauriers) Horan. A year after graduating Monsignor Coyle High School in Taunton, Mass., John enlisted in the US Navy in 1938 and was proud of his 20 years in submarine service. He went to boot camp at Newport, R.I., then attended trade school in Norfolk, Va. From there he was sent to Sub Base at Coco Solo, Canal Zone, Panama, and was assigned to USS S-47 where he learned the workings of diesel-powered engines through hands-on experience. His next duty station was at Sub School, Groton as an instructor, ending his naval career aboard USS Tench with an extended cruise to the Mediterranean. His commendations were Submarine Combat Insignia WWII Victory Medal, American Defense Medal, China Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal 5th award, Korean Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon, United Nations Service Medal, Philippine Liberation, Japanese Occupation, and American Campaign. He worked at Electric Boat, retiring after 27 years, as general foreman, Nuclear Quality Control Inspection. John enjoyed making improvements to his home, traveling as a civilian, and was an avid tennis player for many years as a member of Pond View Racquet Club and Thames Valley Men's Tennis League. He was a life member of Sub Vets of WWII, Fleet Reserve Association, Electric Boat Athletic Club, Electric Boat Management Association, Knights of Columbus Nina Council #43, AARP, and former volunteer fireman in Stonington.
