At random: The United States submarine USS TRITON was fitted with twin reactors and was considered the longest submarine ever built until the advent of the OHIO class. The TRITON was designed for a surface displacement of 5,900 tons. Large submarines of other countries have been the Japanese I-400 (5,220 tons), and the French SURCOUF (2,880 tons).

Both are SBNL, Bear...taken last Friday at "Return to Sub School".  These are the two best I could get, as I had a crowd standing in front of me...if any of you remember "how small" the control room was...er, make that is...

Nope, that all came after I left sub school. All we had was the dive trainer and tower.

Return to Sub School is on my bucket list

One more trip through either the wet trainer or escape tower is not.

I also have no desire to try out the fire simulator got burnt in Basic on the big oil fire and haven't like even idea of fire trainer ever since (even though I was a volunter FF for 8 years)

I would like to try out drive and dive again.

No, Cora...that's the "wet trainer" at the Sub Base in New London.  That's how the guys learn how to fix damage to pipes, etc. on the sub.  They throw them in there after 1 day of classroom training...and hope they survive.

Cora, the attached photo was taken in '06, when Garry & I attended "Return to Sub School".  It shows how small the control room is in the wet trainer.

All this modern crap is long after my time. Looks as though it might be a fun project. we did the 100' ascent at the tower (1960). That was a fun ride too! Wish that I could do it again...

The bottom pic that Patti posted is of the flange letting loose and the kids have to tighten it back up while it is dumping in cold sea water into the compartment. When I went through there in '90 I think at the end of the drill we were standing on top of the railing still working a couple of problems and damn that water was cold

Actually mate, I used to 'correct' the spelling when I wrote it, then a few years ago it dawned on me that no matter this difference in how we spell harbour to your harbor...that the correct spelling of Pearl Harbor is in fact...Pearl Harbor

Just like if you guys spelt Sydney Harbour without the 'u', you would then be incorrect.

I lost track of how many times I went through them They were always cold even in Pearl. First couple times there were always leaks you had to soft patch (marlin and rubber) when I last went through they were just starting to use the fancy clamps with the adjustable screws. Worst was always using bandit strap which always cut me two or three times, and just when you start to feel good about the process they threw that MSW leak where you had to fix with a dc plug (like the Kobiashi Maru from Star Trek the only one I ever heard to have beaten that leak cheat and snuck a flange and bolts into the dc gear)

This is the "little leak" that caused all that water.

That is one of the many leaks that they have in the trainer and I remember standing on top of the railing working to fix the flange leak, my buddy and I stashed some tools prior to the leak on top of one of the pieces of equipment thinking that we would out smart the instructors only to find out that we placed the tools in the wrong spot and they went into the bilge when the started the leak The fire trainer there was very cool back in '90 and we were one of the first classes to use it so at Pearl doing the fire trainer there just wasn't the same.

I don't think the Sub School for us reservists in Hunter's Point had a wet trainer if that's what you call it.  We had to wait until we went active duty to go through the tower in Pearl and we went to I think Treasure Island for shooting and fire and smoke training.

Did that in sub school long ago. There is one thing missing. We banded things, put in wood plugs, and I think we closed a few valves. The thing that was missing in all that training......fear!!!

I remember one time at Bangor even the fear was there..... it was during one of the off crews and we had to do some type of DC re certification so so many teams went through the wet trainer and so many fire and so on.... I was CPO in charge of one of the wet trainer teams and I know that SOB running it thought we were a tad cocky and was more than ready to drown a couple of us just to prove a point. I swear I did drown that day

The 657 had its reunion in 08 at Groton. We toured the whole deal. It was great.

Also, being at that location attracted the most we ever had for a reunion.

The base was very open with a boat tour, and facitlites tour; plus lunch at the chow hall which is more like a fast food joint.

still and all ... the adrenalin was rushing fer sure as the trainers threw problems in quick succession! My first experience was at Pearl on Ford Island.
That was ca. 67/68
