At random: In their history, submarines were called by many names such as 'eel boats', 'plunging boats', 'devil divers', and 'pig boats'. Technically, and by size, the submarine is a ship, but it has been called a boat since its earliest days, and the term is steeped in tradition. Submariners almost invariably call their ships 'boats".

BARCZAK, Walter J. "Walt", 82, of Wakefield, MA died Sunday, May 24, 2009 at the Meadowview Rehabilitation Center in North Reading. Born in Buffalo, NY on August 29, 1926, he was the son of the late John and Suzanna (Mikulska) Barczak. Mr. Barczak was a graduate of Kenmore High School in New York and had attended Wentworth Institute of Technology. He was a World War II Navy Veteran serving on the USS Sea Cat (SS-399) in the South Pacific and earned the American Theater, Asiatic Pacific, Philippine Liberation, Submarine Combat Insignia and the World War II Victory combat service ribbons. Mr. Barczak was a self employed mason. He was a life long member of the Crystal Community Club in Wakefield and St. Florence Parish in Wakefield. Mr. Barczak is survived by his wife Eleanor V. (Colantuono) Barczak, his six children, Linda M. Sjostrom (Doug) of Tewksbury, Michael Barczak (Valerie) of Bradford, John Barczak of Maine, Cheryl A. Barczak (Jay) Butterbrodt of North Andover. David Barczak (Mary) of Wilmington and Lisa J. Sletterink (Glenn) of Wakefield, two sisters; Gene Cuzydlo and Mary Barczak both of New York and two brothers; Robert Barczak and James Barczak both of NY. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Barczak was predeceased by three sisters; Helen Siminski, Ann Bianchi and Jenny Butler. His funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave, Wakefield on Friday at 8:30 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass in St. Florence Church, 47 Butler Ave., Wakefield at 9:30 a.m. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 3 to 8 p.m. Interment will be at Forest Glade Cemetery in Wakefield.

WION, George W., 61, died early Friday morning, May 22, 2009, at a local hospital of a prolonged illness and complications. George was born March 25, 1948, in Bucyrus, Ohio, and was the son of the late John A. and Lois Gorham Wion of Brokensword, Ohio, and later Bucyrus. A 1966 graduate of Wynford High School, he attended one and a half years of business college in Cleveland, Ohio, after which he entered the US Navy and served as a missile technician onboard the nuclear submarine USS Mariano G. Vallejo during the Vietnam War. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Wion. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Rachel Johnson Wion. They married on Oct. 4, 1975, at Brokensword United Methodist Church. George is also survived by his children and their families, Traci and Charles Spicer of Fairfield, Ohio, and daughter, Brittnie, Johnathon Wion and April Osborn of Haltom City and children, Gillian, Trey and Violet, Nicholas and Laurie Wion of Cleveland, Ohio, and children, Alexandra and Jack; his sister, Florence and brother-in-law, Dwight Harer, of Lykens, Ohio, and their family, Jayson and Tammy Harer of Lykens, Ohio, and sons, Zachary and Andrew, Stacey and Chad Frias and daughter, Gabriella of Hilliard, Ohio. He was the son-in-law of Wallace and Verna Johnson of Bucyrus; and brother-in-law to Pauline Johnson Dennis and Cecil Dennis, and sons, Gregory, Wayne, Mark and Gregg. Service: Noon Thursday at Wise Funeral Service, 129 W. Warren St., Bucyrus, Ohio 44820, with Deacon Bill Horning officiating. Interment: Brokensword Cemetery, Brokensword, Ohio, with military honors provided by American Legion Post 181 of Bucyrus. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wise Funeral Service. Memorials: Donations may be sent to the funeral home and will go to the Autism Foundation for research purposes, which was very dear to his heart.

Charles "Charlie" Cleveland, 73, of Jonesville, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2009, surrounded by his loving family at Albany Medical Center following an injury sustained from a fall. Born March 7, 1936 in Cambridge, NY he was the son of the late Ernest and Alice Cleveland. He graduated from Salem Central School in 1954. He was married to his loving wife of 50 years, Maureen (Sheridan) and resided in Jonesville for the last 42 years. He served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years. During this time, he served as a crew member aboard the submarine Triton USSN586, which circumnavigated the world in Magellan's path. He also served on an aircraft carrier, destroyer tender and several other submarines. He was an active member of the Albany-Saratoga Submarine Vets and was very proud to have served in the U.S. Navy. After Charlie retired from the U.S. Navy he continued to work as an electrician for many years with Valley Equipment in Schenectady. Charlie was awarded a certificate as Mr. Fix-it from his neighbors and continued to be the one to call on if something needed repair. Charlie could usually be found out at "The Barn" tinkering with his latest project. His children and grandchildren also called on Papa to help with their fix-it needs. He was predeceased by his brother, Howard Cleveland. In addition to his wife, survivors include his children, Kevin and his wife, Samantha of Rotterdam Jct., Cynthia Cleveland and James McAuliffe of Clifton Park, Christopher and his wife, Marlena of Waterford, Jeffrey of Salem, Kathryn South and her husband, Bud of Ballston Spa; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, James Cleveland of Plattsburgh; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, at Armer Funeral Home, Inc., 39 East High Street, Ballston Spa, NY. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Salem, NY. Family and friends are invited to call Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Jonesville Volunteer Fire Company, 953 Main Street, Clifton Park, NY 12065. The family would like to thank the staff at the SICU at Albany Medical Center for the care and support provided by the doctors and nurses to our family over the last several days.

Thomas Jackson "Jack" Thornton, Jr., husband of Martha Anne Lively Thornton of Mt. Pleasant, SC passed away Monday, May 25, 2009 at his residence. He served for twenty years in the US Navy as a Submariner. Surviving are his wife of thirty-six years, M. Anne Thornton of Mt. Pleasant, SC, one son, Victor Leith of St. Louis, MO; seven daughters, Autumn Steele of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Laurie Rountree Martin, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Ellen Rountree Richards and her husband, Jeff Richards, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Nancy Parlman Heide of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Sheri Gomez of Dallas, TX, Lynn McGee of Vernon, FL and Deborah Faaborg of Dallas, TX; twenty-one grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The funeral service will be Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at three o'clock in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL. Mr. Thornton was born November 13, 1943, in Donalsonville, GA, son of the late Thomas Jackson Thornton, Sr. and Lillian Helms Thornton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jack Thornton's Grandchildren College Fund, 1293 Old Colony Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.
