Edward "Ed" Joseph Guntrum, 85, of Centralia, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2009. He was born in Duluth Minnisota on July 2, 1923. He married Margaret "Margo" Amelia Nelson of Centraila in San Francisco, California on December 13, 1947 and they were happily and lovingly married until her death in Centralia on December 26, 2001. The son of a steel mill owner, Ed's formative years were spent in Gary Indiana, where he was president of the debate team, and active in baseball and basketball. When the United States was forced into World War 2, Ed faked his age so that he could be a part of the war effort and joined the Navy at age 16 as a boot seaman. A submarine sailor [Pintado, Blueback], he fought in World War 2 and Korea working his way up "through the ranks". Ed retired as a full Commander in 1973. He continued to serve his country on Guam after his retirement, where his job as an antenna tech on neculear submarines played a vital part of the efforts in the Vietnam war. Although his career took him to numerous ports, upon retiring, he and Margo continued to travel all over the world. He enjoyed being a "snow bird" and spending the winter months at his home in Palm Desert California. His wife, his grand children, puttering around the house, his golf game and his country were his passions. Surviving are 2 children: Edward Allan Gunrtum, 57 residing in Centralia, WA. and Debby Boyd 60 residing in San Diego, CA. Also surviving are 3 grandchildren: Edward Donald Boyd, 36, Ashley Anne Guntrum 22, and Heather Mortensen 31. He is also survived by 5 great grandchildren; Ryan and Elise Boyd; Brinden Guntrum and Kolby and Kyilee Mortensen. A memorial service will be held at Noon on May 30th in the Best Western Park Place Inn and Suites 201 SW Interstate Ave Chehalis, WA 98532. 360-748-4040 Please sign the guestbook at www.legacy.com/chronline.
