At random: Fleet Admiral Halsey in a book called "The Admirals" when asked "What is the ultimate strategic weapon that is bringing the enemy to its knees? Halsey's reply "If I had to give credit to the instruments and machines that won us the war in the Pacific, I would rank them in this order: SUBMARINES, FIRST; RADAR, SECOND; PLANES, THIRD AND BULLDOZERS FOURTH."

Some of you may have heard through USSVI bulletins or via scuttlebutt, but this is to announce the Silent Service Motorcycle Club (SSMC).  The club founder is Bob Opple of USSVI Seattle Base and is co-founded by myself and Tom Floersch of Seattle Base and Ken Board of South Sound Base.

While we are not an official spin-off of USSVI, we are closely associated and supportive of USSVI requiring all SSMC members to be National members of USSVI on initial entry.

The purpose of the club is to promote and educate about the rich heritage of the submarine service.  We do this primarily by simply being visible in the community.  We have designed a very attractive club patch (see below) and with the few members we have in our start-up period, we are getting lots of questions about, and positive feedback, on the club patch.  As you can see, being a member of the club requires no hard work, just participate in club rides, parades and similar events with the club, on your motorcycle, and interact with as many "civilians" as you can.

Our website is http://www.SilentServiceMC.com and we have a few photographs of the earliest members there now.  Club membership is inexpensive at $20 per year.  Membership requirements are on the website but briefly, you have be or have been qualified in Submarines, be a USSVI National member (base membership is not required) at the time of initial membership, and have a motorcycle (all brands) over 500cc in size.  For spouses/partners/riding buddies... Associate membership is available if sponsored by a full member (you must be re-sponsored each year as well).

National SSMC membership is available now.  We are close to chartering a few local Chapters in CA and TX already (all it takes is five National members in close proximity and willing to do the organization work).  For a yet to be determined time, plankowner patches will be available as well (like the main club patch, they look great!).  The membership application form is on the website.  You can download an order form for the club patch and other patches or order them online.

So, if you ride, I strongly urge you to consider joining SSMC and proudly wear the patch.  So far, it's been nothing but fun.  Have a look at the website and if you have question, just ask me or any of the officers listed on the website.

I hope to see some of you on a future ride!

Don

I joined up right away and became a plank owner; already signed up one other member from Escolar Base and we're looking for enough of us Michigan Riders to get our own chapter.
BZ Don; just waiting for the rest of my patches and I'll get my vest ready to make it's debut.

I'm squeezing my checkbook ...thinking of joining but I'm on the wrong coast shipmates..
Ahh what the hey....like the good Doc says maybe we can start a local Chapter..
And I promise not to wear all that Nazi jewelry stuff and leave my chains and battle helmet at home
Riding while wearing a Kilt sounds like fun.. Gotta be a short kilt though, We don't want it blowing up into our faces while we tool along a 55..

Checks in the mail...

Smiley:
Since you're in Connecticut grab Billy Bob; he just got one of them "metric bikes" with about 1100 CC's to haul his big old country butt around on. That gives you two of the five you need to start a chapter; big as Billy Bob is he might count for two all by himself.
Welcome Aboard

We are primarily "National" at the moment Smiley but the Seattle area "Cascade" chapter plays the dual role of national and local chapter.  I think/hope we'll grow quickly.  The point is to ride with the SSMC colors on so folks ask questions about the patch at MC events or when you are riding around alone.  Then at the club level, if you end up in a local chapter, ride in parades, perhaps do funeral procession escorting/honor guard and whatever else you can thing of to promote the cause.  There's a bit less stucture than a USSVI base but the idea is to take the submarine show on the road - and have a blast while doing it.

DAMN!!!!!!! You guys are trying to get me divorced or get my throat cut one. Ball & Chain gave me the choice...bike or life. She just doesn't see how I can have the luck and skill I once had on a bike now that I'm 67. "But Darlyn" I say and she says, "Your butt on a slab". No sense of humor, I tell ya.

Ralph,
Do what I do stomp into whatever room she is in and say in a loud voice (as you are falling to your knees) "Please let me go out !! Please! Pretty please!!!!!!" she takes pity on me and lets me go... no really my wife heard about it and told me I was joining as it would keep me out of trouble. (I don't think she understands submarine sailors very well)
