At random: USS R-6 was fitted the first prototype US submarine snorkel at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the closing months of the European part of WW II in April / May 1945 and successfully tested it off Fort Lauderdale, Fl. as the war against Japan ended in August 1945. The snorkel was removed from the USS R-6 and she was decommissioned and scrapped in September 1945.

Subject: Late Obit, services are Monday

Captain Robert (Bob) Archer, USN, Ret., former SP11 and SWFLANT XO, passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2009 after battling cancer for the last several months. Captain Archer's 38 year Navy career included more than ten years as a Missile Technician throughout 70's to his retirement in 2007 as a Submarine Ordnance Limited Duty Officer Captain. Over those almost four decades of service to the Navy and the Country, he served the majority of his time in direct support of the Strategic Weapons System Program and SSP in general. He will surely be missed. Funeral and viewing for CAPT Archer will be at the Oxley Heard Funeral Home, 1305 Atlantic Ave, Fernandina Beach, FL (904)261-3644. The viewing will take place on Sunday, June 7th, between 5-7 pm. The funeral service will be held at 11 am on Monday, June 8th. CAPT Archer's remains are currently scheduled to be interred in Arlington National Cemetery on 19 October 2009 at 11am. As a true Navy Sailor, CAPT Archer requested that donations be made to the Navy Relief in his name, vice flowers. Donations may be made directly to Navy Relief.
