At random: Probably the most expensive ballast ever carried by a ship was two tons of gold and eighteen tons of silver coins carried by the U.S. submarine TROUT while on a trip from Corregidor to Pearl Harbor early in World War II. TROUT had removed her moveable ballast to allow for a larger cargo of ammunition to be transported for the defenders on the embattled island. Lcdr. Fenno, TROUT's CO, planned on replacing the ballast with sand bags, but found none were available. The gold and silver from the Bank of the Philippines was substituted as ballast, which also solved the problem of removing the treasure to a safe place prior to invasion by the enemy.

For Doc Gardner and anyone else that would like to help bring a bit of sanity to a soldier in Iraq just starting his 3rd tour, my grandson would, I'm sure, be delighted to hear from you (tell him how rough submarine life was - LOL)...

Chief:
My wife and I are collecting donations now and will be sending packages to deployed troops in July. Your grandson will be one of the recipients. Last November we sent 22 boxes of "stuff" to the Marines in Al Akbar (sp?) Province and they put it to good use.
Just our way of paying back.
BTW; submarine duty was rough; just ask any of us.

Jan (etal), all the standard "no - no's" apply (mostly common sense stuff)... Any geedunk, games, music, reading - all those thing would be appreciated and shared with the outfit... Kind of like the holiday season around the boats where we had the look of a USO parcel drop!

Thanks for any effort on goodies that you guys (and gals) can forward to them... I know I'll hear back (and will share same) as he and they get anything from back here - let 'em know it came from the submarine community and we'll all be the talk of Iraq...

Ian, thank you VERY much for the offer... let me ask our daughter before I commit to anything, we don't see our grandson that often to know his taste in music and I don't want to get it wrong -  He does live with his mom out on Oahu so she should know... Back to you with this tomorrow (Tues.) evening....

To Doc, Bear, Ian and anyone else with an urge to make a soldier in Iraq smile, I offer the following from my daughter re: my grandson...

Joshua "likes" any seeds, nuts etc. but unsalted (he's into the health thing unlike his grandpa).  He does like the beef jerky route along with dried fruits (pineapple, mango, apricot etc.), triscuits - - all that type of snack food.  His music is pretty general, rock and roll etc. (no hard rock, rap), he obviously likes Hawaiian music (from home).  As to books; history, military, archeology, geography - along those lines...

I really don't think you can go wrong with almost anything you wish send.  He obviously has very close ties with his fellow soldiers of the 442nd, "Go For Broke", out there in Iraq and would share anything coming in with the troops around him... I will get feedback from him and will definitely share same with all... Thanks for caring guys and gals, from a proud (and always concerned) grandpa!!!!

I'd just bet you a box full of sunflower seeds and corn nuts would be appreciated...May not turn on a lot of folks, but it's good trading fodder.....I'd have killed for Corn nuts on patrol!

Chief:
The "goodies" are being gathered and the plan is to ship the boxes on July 18th. We have 4 troops (including your grandson) we are covering this time. If anyone else on the BBS has a deployed relative or friend and would like to be added send me an e-mail or private message and we'll see what we can do. We do this twice a year; next time is just before Christmas so they have a little something for the holidays.

We need their address and just a little bit about them; the "nurses" (my wife and her co-workers) like to personalize the messages that go with the shipment.
The "nurses" love to receive photos back when the boxes are being opened; they have built a great scrapbook which keeps them motivated to keep doing this. Seeing the troops smile is a special treat for them (me too)

Never fear, Chief...this group always seems to come through...and the Lynn's are no exceptions.  I'm in the process of making up a "box of goochies" for my cousin, Eddie, who is in Afghanistan right now...so to make up one more...NO PROBLEM...it's an honor!!!

I've sent a couple of packages here and there....  I got a good response re: copies of the latest "OUTSIDE" magazine, Gold Bond crotch powder, and socks (cheap tube socks, lots of 'em).  I vacuum sealed the socks in one of those kitchen gadgets -- saved a lot of space.

I just got this today.   Anybody want to reply?

From: Sgt Bill Anderson

Hello,

My name is Bill Anderson and I am an American soldier serving in the
Military of the 3rd Infantry Division in Iraq. As you know, we are being
attacked by insurgents everyday and car bombings. We stumbled into Saddam
Hussein's storage vault and discovered funds belonging to his family. The
total amount is US$18.5 Million dollars. We want to move this money to a
reputable/sincere person for investment purposes. This is the reason for
contacting you.
We are ready to compensate you with good percentage of the funds. We have
shipped the money out of Iraq to a security company via diplomatic means
as Iraq is a war zone. We want you to help us receive the funds into your
bank account for purposes of investiments or you can set up a fresh
account for this transaction. If you are interested, I will send you more
details. We are three colleagues in this business transaction and I was
mandated to find a good and respectable partner with great repute that we
can trust. Can we trust you?. If we can trust you, kindly send me an
e-mail signifying your interest and supply me with the following
information:-

1 Your telephone numbers(Cell/Home)
2 Your full mailing address
3 Your Ocupation
4 Your marital status.
5 Your age/sex
6 Your Position
7 Your First & Last Name

This transaction is 100% risk free. You can visit this website for better
understanding. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/2988455.stm

Kindly getback to as soon as possible.
Respectfully,
Sgt.Bill Anderson.
