CASHERO, Francis James, 88, passed away peacefully in his sleep June 9, 2009 after fighting leukemia for many years. Francis was born February 11, 1921 in Oklahoma to James Edward and Germaine (Moreau) Cashero. Francis spent most of his life as a master carpenter and job superintendent for Colombo Construction building large commercial buildings, banks, schools and libraries throughout California. In the early 50's he was part of a team of carpenters that built the towns for the early nuclear bomb tests in the Nevada desert. In the 60's he and a partner formed Shepard & Cashero, they built many of the custom homes in the Panorama area. He remained a loyal member of the Carpenters Local 743 Union for 61 plus years. Francis also served Kern County as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff for many years. Francis joined the Navy in 1939 and became a Torpedoman in the early Silent Service aboard submarines. His service continued until the end of the war in 1945 and during this time he served on 6 different submarines. He was recently interviewed extensively and quoted many times in a newly released historical account of the famous submarine, the USS SEAWOLF. He was extremely proud of his service in WWII. He was reluctant to talk about this time in history, but once you asked questions and got his memory going, he could tell you stories for days on end. He is from the period of our Greatest Generation. Francis was one of the oldest and a 60 plus year member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Arie 93. He was also a 35 year member of the United Ancient Order of Druids serving in all stations/chairs to become Arch Druid and trustee. During his many years as a Druid member he helped run the Wednesday and Sunday Bingo and the monthly steak dinners. He didn't like being in charge but this duty always seemed to fall to him. In their later years Francis took care of his wife of 63 years at home until it became necessary to have her daily care handled in a convalescent environment. This did not stop him from visiting as many times each week as possible and they stayed in constant communication once Helen learned how to use a cell phone and then boy did they burn up the minutes. They both looked forward to the monthly candlelight dinners that were sponsored by the facility for the residents and families to be together. Francis never missed these opportunities and was always a constant visitor until her death 6 months ago. Francis passed away just a few hours after what would have been their 63rd anniversary. Many may have thought Francis to be a gruff individual, but for those who truly knew him, they knew that he had a heart of gold and would come to your assistance at the drop of a hat. He used his skills as a master carpenter to build and construct whatever you needed. He is preceded in death by both parents and stepmother, Florence; his wife of 63 years, Helen L Cashero; 2 of 4 children, Frank James Cashero and JoAnn Davis-Neal; son-in-law, Jim Davis; daughter-in-law, Joyce Stanton; brother, Joe Cashero; 1 sister, RoseMarie status unknown; 1 great grandchild, Whitney Davis. He is survived by son, William Stanton (Trudy); daughter, Deborah Wilburn (John); son-in-law, Art Neal. Francis had 4 children, 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Visitation will be held at Greenlawn Mortuary on River Blvd. on Monday 15th from 4 to 8 p.m. Chapel Services will be Tuesday 16th at 10:00 a.m. followed by graveside services. Now that Francis and Helen are gone we hope that you will think of them and have fond memories that you will cherish and keep in you hearts. Francis James (FJ or Jim) Cashero 1921 - 2009
