At random: A typical modern submarine may require as many as 2,000 working drawings for the more than 7,000,000 items used in its construction. Blueprints from these drawings if placed end to end would make a strip 250 miles long.

I was aboard USS Skipjack somewhere up north working on my quals and having the time of my life.

Why the hell couldn't the Navy ever have the recruits show up during the day? Inquiring minds want to know!!!

I showed up at GLakes about 8AM March 10th 1963 just after a snow storm and colder than a well diggers butt. That gave us plenty of time to shovel the road from the RR station to the barracks before the noon meal. It was not a "warm welcome" at all. For over a week we lived in our same civies before we were issued clothing other than gloves, a poncho, and wool watch cap. I thought of it as early submarine training.

That was about time I started bootcamp at NTC. I was in company 373. As a Reserve I had the option of going to bootcamp and I thought it would be beneficial if I went. I graduated high school and went to bootcamp.

About the time I started my Active Duty.  Reported to NAVSTA CHASN for further assignment to an operating submarine.

In July Sea Poacher returned from the Med to the CNSY and I went aboard.

I had just qualified in submarines on my first boat, and was finally fully recovered from the associated celebrations. Another month, and it was off to Nuke School at Mare Island.

I was 14 and working as slave labor in my Dad's strawberry field picking berries from about 6 am till noon. We did this from the second week of May till about the 4th of July then the big part of the field stop producing and only the everbearing ones had fruit. Then we spent the rest of the day doing all those kid things that parents would be jailed for now. Like playing on the railroad tracks, swimming in the creek, driving a beater car my dad had for hauling wood etc, and so on
