At random: Nautilus has long been a popular name for a submarine. Some of the more famous of these are Robert Fulton's NAUTILUS (1800), Jules Verne's fictional Nautilus, and the NAUTILUS of Sir Hubert Wilkins in which he attempted a voyage to the North Pole under the ice (1931). There have also been three U.S. submarines of that name, including the world's first nuclear powered submarine built by the Electric Boat Division.

What is a Mark 6-3 destroyer type DR Tracer? It was installed by the Sound School.

Elmer says that, "Every third or fourth bullet I shot was a tracer."

Is a Mark 6-3 destroyer type DR Tracer something to do with ballistics - or - sound?

I thought I could do this, and I'm not ready to give up yet, but God I wish Elmer was here. For many reasons.

I do not know about the numbers but a tracer was an aiming tool. in a machine gun belt of ammunition every 5th round , I think it was, was a tracer round. This left a visible streak in the air. You've seen WW II film where you can see lots of shooting at Japanese planes and the sky is filled with streaks of light. Those are tracers. See picture.

In your first sentence he was referring to a DR "DEAD RECKONING" tracer.  A machine that would trace a line on a large paper that showed where the ship had traveled and the source corrections that were made. It probably was designed to be installed on a Navy destroyer-type vessel.
