At random: "THAT'S NICE THAT THE ELECTRICIAN AND A-GANGERS WORKED ALL NIGHT TO GET THE DIESEL GENERATOR READY, BUT WE'RE NOT GETTING UNDERWAY UNTIL EVERY TOASTER IN THE WARDROOM PANTRY IS WORKING" quoted during Tautog's DustPac '85-86 Deployment

Brrrrr!

My last patrol on Monroe Blue was an ERP in the dock at Holy Loch.

It was October/November, so we didn't have snow yet, but at night the wind coming down from the Highlands cut through the dock like a freight train, and it was colder than a Wican's posterior on Halloween!

And no, I won't tell you how I know about Wican's posteriors..... not on a public board, anyway!

One patrol on the 617 and two on the 626. Quite an experience. I'm glad I got to see how it was back then.

Yup, those mid watches on deck during the EB overhauls was a bear in the Winter. The space heater they put in the wood guard shacks could melt Lead. They were good to heat the Hostess Fried Pies though. The worst I remember was a 25 below zero night with a not so slight breeze wafting in from Long Island Sound. Those were some quick rounds that night.

One look at that and I started having flashbacks to a winter in Portsmouth NH on the AJ. I was from New England but the cold kicked my butt. The best part was missile shots in Florida.

Ah yes! Winter in the yards in either Portsmouth or Groton was a ton of fun. One point of interest: note how every frame is indicated by a lack of snow - in between the frames, insulation keeps heat in and cold out, but the frame itself conducts enough heat from the interior to melt the snow at that point.
