- (Clarinda Herald-Journal)
Clemmeth Mitchell Crussell was born July 13, 1931 east of Bethesda, Iowa in Douglas Township to Jasper and Amy (McNeal) Crussell. He went to North Page Country School and graduated from Clarinda High School in 1950. Clem served in the United States Navy for four years on a submarine and destroyer. He worked at Wilsons Meat in Clarinda on production from 1968 until they closed in 1991. Clem farmed all of his life east of Bethesda until the last several years when his health began to fail. On August 20, 1977 he was united in marriage to Pauline (Dolecheck) Powell at Diagonal, Iowa. One of his primary interests was horses. He rode a horse to school as a boy, traveled with friends to compete in pony pulls, and owned several ponies, riding horses and Missouri mules throughout his life. He was a typical Iowa farmer with crops, hogs and cattle. Unfortunately, he did not have the 400 goats he claimed he had when he met Pauline. Clem's other interests were his family, church family at Rose Hill Church of rural Hepburn, and dancing. He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law Al Ashton, brother-in-law Joe Copelin, step-son Edwin Powell, sister-in-law Josephine Gray and her husband Bill. Surviving is wife Pauline of Clarinda, Iowa; children Debbie Ashton of Westminster, Colorado and David Crussell and wife Paula of Clarinda, Iowa; step-children Bob Powell of St. Louis, Missouri, Jack Powell of St. Louis, Missouri, John Powell and wife Michelle of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, and Rick Powell of Silex, Missouri; sisters Millicent Copelin of Villisca, Iowa, Lee Mowry and husband Walter of Shenandoah, Iowa, and Frankie Nicholas and husband Woody of Coral Gables, Florida; brother-in-law Duane Dolecheck and wife Eula of Creston, Iowa; grandchildren Travis and Amber Crussell, both of Clarinda, Iowa; step-grandchildren Justin and Jeremy Powell; great-grandchildren Gracelynn and Katelynn; and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 19, 2009 at Rose Hill Church, Clarinda, Iowa with interment in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorials are Family Choice. The Tradition of Walker-Merrick Funeral Home of Clarinda provided arrangements.

- (Charlotte Observer)
Oliver Leon Thompson, 81, of Charlotte, left on 'eternal patrol' June 21, 2009, at Gaston Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. He was born in Hendersonville, NC, on April 22, 1928, the second son of the late Paul Thompson Sr. and the late Eunice Nelson Thompson. Upon graduating from Berryhill High School in 1945, he volunteered at age 16 for World War II, serving first in the Merchant Marines and then in the Navy as a Submariner on the USS Sea Leopard (SS-483). He worked a year at McClure Lumber Company before entering Clemson University. He interrupted his studies to re-enlist in the Navy for the Korean War, serving again on the Sea Leopard. While on this second tour of duty he met Theresa, his wife of 55 years, in Washington, DC, and they were married on January 23, 1954. Oliver's career demonstrated his intelligence, interpersonal skills, and craftsmanship. He worked over a decade at Pneumafil Corporation in field service work and later at other industrial firms. His later working years were with his father and brother at the family business, Paul Thompson Furniture Repair. After retirement he avidly pursued the things that mattered most to him - gardening, furniture-making, fishing, hunting, and spending time with his grandchildren. Retirement also gave him the time to renew his ties with his wartime friends. Upon joining the US Submarine Veterans of World War II, he quickly rose to the level of NC State Commander and served in that capacity for several years. In the late 1990's he became active in that group at the National Level, and in 1999-2000 he became the National Commander. For years he pushed the US Postal Service to release a World War II submarine postage stamp. He realized this dream in April 2000 when the Postal Service included one in a series commemorating the US submarine force's 100th anniversary. He also designed a June 1994 cancellation stamp for the commissioning of the USS Charlotte. Oliver was a proud member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and was a Shriner at the Long Creek Masonic Lodge. Oliver is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 55 years, Theresa Dulsky Thompson; son Michael and wife Ginger; son John and wife Marcia; son David and wife Lisa; and daughter-in-law Toni Thompson. His youngest son Thomas predeceased him. Oliver leaves behind his grandsons Jeremy, Alex, Eric, Neil, and Dallas and granddaughters Casey, Ashley, and Kelsey. Oliver's siblings Paul Thompson Jr., Carolyn Young, Norman Thompson, Charles Thompson, Vera Smith, and Deanna Jones survive him. Brothers Marvin Thompson, Curtis Thompson, and Emmett Thompson predeceased him. Pallbearers are his grandsons and a great-nephew Grant Thompson. Funeral services will be at 3:00PM Wednesday at Cook's Memorial Presbyterian Church, preceded by a viewing at 2:00PM. The family will receive friends following the graveside service. Memorials may be made to Cook's Memorial Presbyterian Church, the United States Submarine Veterans, or any veterans' group. Condolences may be offered at www.forestlawnwest.com. Arrangements are in the care of Forest Lawn West Funeral & Cremation Service (704.395.0055).
