Lloyd V. MacVane, 91, died on Monday, June 29, 2009, at Maine Veteran's Home in Scarborough. He had previously resided in Portland where he had been cared for by his son, Gerald MacVane and his wife Martha for many years. He had also resided in Westbrook with his daughter, Kathleen and her husband Lee. Lloyd was the son of the late James and Vivian Bickford MacVane of Cliff Island. He was married for 60 years to the late Elizabeth (Blake) MacVane, who died in 2000. He was also preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters, Earl, Leon, Leslile, Paul, David, Marjorie and Madelyn (Wilson). Lloyd was retired from the United States Navy where he served in the submarine service during World War II. Prior to entering submarine service, he served on the USS Boise. A newspaper report from that time stated that the Boise, 'survivor of one of the Navy's most thrilling sagas, came home from the Solomon Islands war zone today with the unparalleled achievement of having sunk or helped to sink six Japanese warships in 27 minutes of deadly close-range firing on the night of October 11-12-'1943.' Many of the submarines he served on during the war, notably the USS Pampanito, also were involved in news worthy combat [Spikefish, Plunger, Gato; QM1(SS)]. He was also retired from ADT and had worked for a time at Shaw's Northgate. Lloyd loved caring for his home and yard, spending time with his friends and family, and occasional visits to the horse races. He had also been an avid hunter and loved being in the woods. He is survived by grandchildren Kimberly Leighton, Susan Garland (William), Deborah Grant (Peter), Shawn Hutchins, Sarah Collins (John), Heather Hale (Ryan), Glenn Cummings (Leslie) and Edward Cummings (Sarah) and by many great-grandchildren. The family wishes to acknowledge the compassionate care given Lloyd by the staff of the Maine Veteran's Home. They wish also to thank Annette Thomas and Jane Cantin who lovingly helped care for Lloyd at home. A private graveside service will be held on Thursday, July 2, at 11 a.m., at Brooklawn Memorial Park in Portland. Arrangements are under the guidance of Independent Death Care of Maine, 471 Deering Ave., in Portland. To offer words of condolence, share memories and sign a guest book, go to the obituary page at www.independentdeathcare.com. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Maine Veterans Home 290 U.S. Route 1 Scarborough, Maine 04074 Lloyd V. MacVane
