At random: The first Japanese prisoner of war captured by the Americans was Kazuo Sakamaki, an ensign in the Imperial Japanese Navy. He was captured on the morning of December 7, 1941. Sakamaki had set an explosive charge to destroy his disabled submarine, which had been trapped on Waimanalo Beach. When the explosives failed to go off, he swam to the bottom of the submarine to investigate the cause of the failure and became unconscious due to a lack of oxygen. Sakamaki was found by a Hawaiian soldier, David Akui, and was taken into military custody. When he awoke, he found himself in a hospital under American armed guard. After the war he returned to Japan and found work with the Toyota Motor Corporation before retiring in 1987. Sakamaki died on November 29, 1999, aged 81.

We are so fortunate to live in such a great country and see that there are communities, who support our Military personnel with such regard. As we celebrate our freedom, this reinforces the point that our freedom doesn't come free nor without tremendous sacrifice.
Killed in action the week before, the body of Staff Sergeant First Class John C. Beale was returned to Falcon Field in Peachtree City, Georgia, just south of Atlanta, on June 11, 2009. The Henry County Police Department escorted the procession to the funeral home in McDonough, Georgia. A simple notice in local papers indicated the road route to be taken and the approximate time.
Nowadays one can be led to believe that America no longer respects honor and no longer honors sacrifice outside the military. Be it known that there are many places in this land where people still recognize the courage and impact of total self-sacrifice. Georgia remains one of those graceful places. The link below is a short travelogue of that day's remarkable and painful journey.

No, Freedom does not come free and I sincerely wish there was a way to get it across to the Slackers in this country of ours.
Thanks, Cobber

Thank you Cobber for that tribute, that is one of the finest that I have ever seen for one of our fallen soldiers. His rank was reported as Staff Sergeant (E-6/SSG) and on the billboard as Sergeant First Class (E-7/SFC). It was truly amazing to see the turn out of people wanting to pay their respects to him and his family.

RIP SFC John Beale, we have the watch

What a beautiful post.

It is great to see that many people still respect our service men and women.

It restores my faith that you do not need to be a rock star to get a good send off.

That is one of the most incredible things I have ever seen. It really restores your faith in the American public. I thought that nobody really cared... while our boys are fighting and dying everybody else is at the mall. Not so in Georgia. The streets are closed and thousands line the streets with thier hands over thier heart and carring a large American flag. I tried to mentaly place myself in one of the cars with his family and thought how they must have felt seeing all those people showing thier respects. INCREDIBLE is the only word that comes close to describle this event.
Go with God, SSgt John C. Beale.

That is a superb display of honor for a fallen warrior. I know a lot of people in this land have become jaded by the rhetoric about this war, and the images of the fallen, but it's heartening to know there are still places in this great land where time is taken to properly honor those who gave all. Rest in Peace, SGT Beale.

It's good that so many people appreciate the cost of freedom paid by our young men and their families. Truly a wonderful tribute. As the song said, Proud to be an American.

I wish I could have been there.

RIP, Sergeant First Class John C. Beale

I can only hope that ALL of our fallen soldiers recieve this kind of tribute when they return home, this month has been hard on the Army and Marines and again I can only hope that ALL of our fallen soldiers recieve this kind of reception when the come home for the final time. May GOD bless the folks in Ga who took the time to honor SFC Beale when he came home for the final time, because it means alot to all of us whom are still on Active duty to know that people still TRULY care about us.
