KNIPE, William James, 86, of Chews Landing, died July 10, 2009. Mr. Knipe was born May 4, 1923 in Woodbury, NJ and was a long time member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Chews Landing. He was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Finance. Mr. Knipe served with the Navy Submarine Service during WWII from 1942 through 1946 on the USS Balao (SS-285) and USS Capitaine (SS-336). He also served during the Korean Conflict from June of 1951 to June of 1953 on the USS Fulton (AS-11). Mr. Knipe was the first member of the Board of Education for Triton Regional High School beginning with its construction. He was a lifetime member and commissioner of Glendora Vol. Fire Co. and Chews Vol. Fire Co. He was a life member of American Legion Post 281 Stetser-Lamartine, VFW Post 1714 Choimer Trace and U.S. Sub Vets of WWII. Mr. Knipe was an assistant Scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America through Glendora Methodist Church. Husband of Elizabeth L. (nee Lambert), father of the late Harry E. Loving; brother to James N. Knipe (Ann). Services private at the request of the family. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Mr. Knipe's memory to St. John's Episcopal Church, 1704 Old Black Horse Pike, Chews Landing, NJ 08012. Arthur Lynn Walker, 62, passed away Thursday, July 9, 2009. He was born March 22, 1947 to Mavis "Irene" (Russum) Walker and Ozell Walker of Dallas. He married Judy Johnson Anderson on June 28, 1997 in Cleburne. In July 2008, he moved to Llano after having lived in San Antonio and Alvarado. Mr. Walker was a veteran of the US Navy, serving as a submarine sonar technician and was stationed at Pearl Harbor during the Vietnam conflict. He worked for the US Postal Service as a letter carrier in Dallas for over 30 years, and was a member of the National Rifle Association. Survivors include his wife Judy L. Walker of Llano, two sons Michael Walker of Cheyenne, WY and Scott Walker (Lacy) of NC; step daughter Candy Swanstrom of Arlington; stepson Dustin Wilson (Valarie) of Grand Prairie; two grandchildren Briana and Madison Walker; seven step grandchildren Harley, Carli, Hailey, Daniel, and Jamie Wilson, and Alex and Ashley Swanstrom. Memorial service: 1:00 p.m. at Moore Funeral Home Chapel. An additional memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 15 at Waldrope-Hatfield-Hawthorn Funeral Home in Llano. Gail Norrick Coleman, 71, died unexpectedly at his home on Friday, June 26, 2009 in Redwood Valley, CA. He was born June 2, 1938 in Prescott, AZ. Gail graduated from San Dieguito High School in 1957, where he was a football standout. After graduating from high school, he attended Mira Costa. As a young man, he was the Charter Master Counselor of the Encinitas DeMolay and became a member of the San Dieguito Masonic Lodge at age 21. Gail served in the US Navy aboard the submarine USS Capitaine (SS-336), completing diving school in Pearl Harbor, HI. After his honorable discharge, he completed his Journeyman Carpenter Apprenticeship. He was a partner in WHCO Construction and later began his own company, G.N.C. Construction. He worked as a builder and general contractor for 44 years throughout Arizona, California, Oregon and Texas. Gail was passionate about his profession and received awards for his skilled work from the American Institute of Architects, San Diego Chapter, including a Concrete Masonry Design Award. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jane; and their three children, son, Patrick Coleman and his wife, Michele of Redwood Valley, daughters, Jennifer Gates (Mike) and Laura Coleman, all of Medford, Ore.; four grandchildren, Kyle, Madeline, Gabrielle and Annaleise. Also survived by his mother, Alberta Fixsen; brother, Jim (Marianne) of Encinitas; and uncle, George Turner (Ruth) of Oceanside; cousin, Gladys, her children and spouses of Redding, Calif.; plus many more dear family and friends. Predeceased by grandparents, Addison and Della Turner; and brother, David. Emil Dominic Bartone, 85, of Conneaut, Ohio, died at his home Friday afternoon, July 10, 2009.He was born at his family home on Broad Street in Conneaut on January 27, 1924, the son of John and Mary (Marano) Bartone. As a boy, he enjoyed living near Lake Erie with the opportunity to swim in the summer and ice skate in the winter. Emil and his brothers helped at home with the family garden and enjoyed spending time with their extended family.Emil attended Conneaut schools until January 1942, when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He chose the submarine service, hoping that he would quickly be sent to Pearl Harbor where his brother, Henry, was stationed. However, he and his brothers, Anthony, Fred, Henry and John, were not to be reunited until after the war. Instead, Emil served for six years on war patrols in the South Pacific from posts in Australia and Hawaii. He served on several submarines including the USS Bonita, USS Billfish, USS Sea Dog and the USS Dentuda [O-3, Raton, CSD 162 Relief Crew]. Emil earned many commendations for his service in W.W.II and the Korean Conflict, including: The Victory Medal W.W.II, three Asiatic Pacific Stars, a Philippine Liberation Star, two Submarine Combat pins, a Navy Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal and a Navy Occupation Service Medal (China Service).After being honorably discharged from the service, Emil returned to Conneaut where he married Barbara Herries and had two children, Robert and Connie. He worked first for the railroad, then as a private contractor in building construction before becoming a supervisor at the P and C Dock Company. Emil retired from the Dock Company in 1983.In 1981, he married Drusilla Swanson Whitney. Emil and his wife enjoyed many volunteer activities at the church where they also attended Sunday School classes together. They traveled to see the areas where Emil had served during the war, including Australia. He served two terms as Commander and was Adjutant for the American Legion Cowle Post 151 from 1973-1979. He was a lifetime member of the Submarine Veterans of W.W.II and was proud of his service to our country. In his later years, Emil wrote a book about his experiences in the Navy. Emil was a trustee of the Conneaut Carnegie Library from 1985-1989, was a past President and Secretary of the Conneaut Exchange Club, a member of the BPOE Lodge 256 and was a member of the Conneaut Charter Commission in 1990. Emil served in many capacities at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, including as Moderator and a trustee for several terms. Emil was an avid Bible student. He spent many hours a day with his Bible studies and wrote a book of biographies of some of his favorite Biblical figures. Emil is survived by his wife of 27 years, Drusilla, and her daughters, Martha (Scott) Fasick of Oxford, OH, Margaret (Tim) Carey of Geneseo, IL., Sarah Whitney of Princeton, NJ, and Barb (Jay) McMellen of North Kingsville, OH; his daughter, Connie (Tim) Voss of Peoria, IL; two brothers, Fred (Maxine) Bartone of Venice, FL, and John (Sharon) Bartone of Traverse City, MI.; sisters-in-law, Altha and Madalyn Bartone; his grandchildren, Stacey and James Tyson Shroyer, Charles and Joseph Carey, Jason and David Fasick and Katelyn and Christopher McMellen. Emil was preceded in death by his son, Robert in 2008; parents; sister, Susan; and brothers, Henry and Anthony.A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 14th, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 211 Buffalo St., Conneaut, Ohio, with the Rev. Dr. Rudolph G. Babcock officiating. Burial with Military Honors provided by Cowle Post 151 of the American Legion will follow in Glenwood Cemetery.A time of fellowship will take place in the Church dining room from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. prior to the Memorial Service on Tuesday.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Conneaut; Hospice of the Western Reserve, Ashtabula; or to the Conneaut Food Pantry.
