NSR I just filed an on-line complaint against a tele-marketer who has been calling my cell phone which is registered in the DO NOT CALL Registy. Does this thing work or am I just engaging in wishful thinking? All my phones are registered but lately they are all being called; I keep forwarding them to Stoops but it doesn't seem to work

NSR Doc - I registered all of my lines shortly after the program started and I've been contacted once for more info on a complaint. You have to re-register every few years, I forget what the number is but I think it is either 2 or 3. When the Gummit called, I asked about their process and was told that some threshhold number of complaints on either a company or a specific line have to occur before they do anything - staffing shortage, you know. Pencild***ed bureaucrats. Why bother passing a law that is unenforceable?

NSR Good point, Jon - Somewhat off the telephone topic, but I also forward SPAM and phishing E-mails to the IRS as well as the State of California Attorney General's office - both organizations have SPAM/Fraudulent E-mail addys on their respective websites - If you all are fortunate enough to live elsewhere than CA, I'd suggest contacting your own state's AG for their addy. CA AG's SPAM E-Mail addy: dca@dca.ca.gov FTC Complaints: spam@uce.gov IRS: phishing@irs.gov Another thing I learned is to <select all> then <copy> then <paste> and forward all SPAM and phishing E-mails to the companies they supposedly represent - we all see e-Bay and other prominent national operations. Whether the gummit pencild**ks do anything, you can be rest assured the companies whose good names are being used will -- I've had dozens of followups from them.

NSR One of the things some telemarketing firms are doing is using robo-dialers - they call random-generated numbers. They don't know what number is being called until the machine dials it. If it is a valid number and someone answers it, they give you their pitch. Doesn't matter if you are registered with the "Do Not Call" list or are using only a cell phone - the machine doesn't know and the companies that use them don't care. There are efforts ongoing in some states to ban such equipment, but as far as I know, none have been signed into law. And again, enforcement will be a function of the number of complaints and the available manpower of the State agency responsible. If I recall correctly, there is a provision in one of the recent Federal Telecommunications Acts that allows you to bill a telemarketer for calls made to you if you are on the "Do Not Call" list, or you tell them not to call you and they continue to do so. Enforcement is via small-claims court.

NSR I have been registered in Florida since the list was first established (before the National list). It cost me $5.00 per year. I file a complaint for every marketing call I get... most years I don't have to pay the $5.00 as the State makes the caller pay my fee as part of the settlement. I love it...it works in Florida!
