Ostiglio F. “Steve” Carbonari, 86, passed away Friday, July 10, 2009, at Windsor Park Manor, Carol Stream. He was born July 25, 1922, in West Frankfort, Ill. Formerly of Spring Hill, FL, Steve was a World War II Navy Submarine Veteran [Pogy, Snook, Pilotfish, Ronquil]. He was a member of the U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was the beloved husband of Marion; loving father of Paul (Mary) Carbonari and Diane (Paul) Holtz; proud grandfather of Dominic Carbonari, Anthony Carbonari, Steven Carl Holtz and Kristen Holtz; fond uncle of John Paul. Services were private. Arrangements were made by DuPage Cremations, Ltd. and Memorial Chapel, 800-588-1132.

Jerry Fisher Chapin, 67, Perry, Ga., died on Tuesday, July 7, 2009 in Perry, Ga. He was born in Lafayette to J.L. Chapin and Gertrude Elizabeth Fisher. In 1965 he married Patricia Applegate. She survives in Perry, Ga. He was raised in Monticello and had lived in Perry, Ga. for the past 4 years moving from South Carolina. While a student at Monticello High School he excelled as a football player from 1956-1960. He was a student at Ball State University prior to joining the U.S. Navy. While serving in the U.S. Navy he completed submarine school and thereafter participated in the famous "Bay of Pigs" in Cuba during the fall of 1961. After retiring and using the skills he had learned in the Navy he took a job with NIPSCO which included managing the Norway Dam Generating Station and later the Generating Station in Wheatfield. Thereafter he took classes at Purdue and in Louisiana acquiring an Associate's Degree which allowed him to substitute teach in Louisiana and later in the Monticello area. He enjoyed people and took volunteering generously. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, and a member of the Houston Lake Baptist Church. For a few years he faithfully visited men at the Lafayette Veterans' Home. He loved nature and was an exceptional fisherman having his picture with the "Biggest Catch" published several times. Other survivors include daughters Angela (Tim) Rutledge, Perry, Ga. and Melinda Chapin, Monticello; a son, Jeremy J. Chapin, Branchville; a sister, Marsh (Allen) Langdon, Indianapolis; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Tuesday at the Miller-Roscka Funeral Home. Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Rev. Alvin Rockey officiating. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Riverview Cemetery in Monticello, with full military rites conducted by the Monticello American Legion, VFW and AMVETS. Memorials may be made to the Houston Lake Baptist Church.
