At random: A submarine, the TURTLE, was employed by the American revolutionary army to attack the British. It was built by David Bushnell at Saybrook, Connecticut, just a few miles from the present site of Electric Boat Division of the General Dynamics Corporation, and the U.S. Naval Submarine Base.

RIVERS, Anthony P., 76, of San Diego, California, passed away peacefully July 9, 2009, surrounded by family and friends. He was born April 10, 1933, in Upstate New York, the son of the late Thomas Patrick and Erma Whitney Rivers. He was the youngest of four siblings. He is survived by his son Clarence V. Rivers; his older brother George Rivers and older sisters Ruth Smith and Mary O'Connor; sister-in-law Violeta Harman and brother-in-law Alva Harman; and several nieces and nephews. Anthony P. Rivers lived a beautiful life filled with joy, love, and accomplishment. He was a kind, giving and loving man who touched everyone with his big smile and even bigger heart. A naval submariner, a senior manager, a teacher/ coach, etc., he proudly loved life and life loved him back fiercely.

Harold Walter "Hal" Linnean Jr., 66, of Tippecanoe, O., passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, July 11, 2009, at his residence. Born August 25, 1942, in Detroit, Mich., Hal was the son of the late Harold Walter and Bernadine (Ellen- berger) Linnean. Hal served in the United States Navy aboard the submarine the USS Odax (SS-484). Upon the successful completion of his Navy tour, Hal was a merchant manager for Sears for 20 years. He was also a self-employed taxidermist. Hal loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Treva (McRoberts) Linnean. Besides his wife, Hal is survived by his children Denise, Rhonda, Shelley, Hal and Christine; his siblings Skip and Patty; and 14 grandchildren.

Doderic Shelton Craig died on July 9, 2009, at the age of 93, of natural causes. Dod was born in Rifle, Colorado on April 11, 1916, was a longtime resident of Leadville and Nucla, Colorado, and spent his last 2 years as a resident at The Seasons in Reno, Nevada. His parents were the late Grace (Peppiatt) Craig of Rifle, Colorado and Alva H. Craig. Alva was a train conductor, so they lived in many towns along the track including Rifle, Tabernash, Colorado Springs, and Denver. He graduated from South Denver High School in 1934. When WW II started, Dod enlisted in the U.S. Navy On December 15, 1941, where he served as a torpedo man/sonar operator on the attack submarine USS Grouper (SS-214). He survived eight combat patrols in the South Pacific, was awarded the Commendation Ribbon (Distinguished with Combat) for his service, and was discharged on September 30, 1945. Following the war, Dod returned to Australia and married Laurel on October 12, 1946. Dod brought his family back to the United States in 1953. He soon found himself working as a miner at the Climax Molybdenum Mine on the crest of the Continental Divide near Leadville, which became his new home. After 23 years, he retired in 1976 as mine foreman with upwards of 200 people under his watchful eye. Dod spent the next five years teaching mine safety at Colorado Mountain College. He further occupied his retirement time hunting, fishing, and cutting fire wood, while in Leadville. Dod is survived by his wife Laurel Mae in Leadville. They were married on October 12, 1946 in Sydney, Australia. He is also survived by his sister Dorothy Wiedeman in Denver, Colorado, his children Steven Doderic of Reno, Cheryl Jean Walker of Los Alamos, New Mexico, Kim Stanley of Winnemucca, Nevada, and Lindsay Dale of Reno. He has seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The family plans a private memorial service. His ashes will be spread in a beautiful spot in the high mountains near Leadville
