At random: USS TRITON, the only American made twin reactor submarine ever built, on May 10, 1960, completed the first totally submerged non-trivial circumnavigation of the world when she followed the route of Ferdinand Magellan for 36,000 miles during 84 days beneath the surface.

The database is back online and I'm going through and fixing code bugs (I had to make a ton of changes to tighten things up).  The basic crew searches work again but there is permanent damage.

All the movie/book/CD/DVD data was damaged beyond recovery and has been eliminated from the website.  Probably 75 percent of the links have been damaged but can be repaired over time (that's the LINKS page and the BOAT SITES pages!).

Worst of all, the email addresses for registered folks were damaged.  I was able to recover a great many of them but somewhere up to maybe 40% are damaged (shortened in length) and therefore unusable.  But as Pat Householder reminded me, people go through emails all the time and high percentage of them are bad anyway and will, in time, be corrected by their owners.

I'm hoping the bastards that did this are locked out now but it'll take a few days to see if they get back in.

It's taken close to five days of non-stop to get it back this far... if I get hit again... I may have to throw in the towel on the database stuff - it's just taking way too much time.

Let me know if you find bugs!

Don Gentry eximplifies all those rare qualities of what we collectively term "SHIPMATE".

Thank you, Shipmate!

Don, Thanks for taking all the time and energy in restoring this data.  It is important to most submariners that we not lose our record of submarine service.  It is important to us now for staying in touch with our shipmates, and for future historians in researching who the crews were that manned these submarines, not to mention to our families.

There are two premier online databases for sub crew records.  Between them they contain records, at least the names, of nearly 80,000 submariners, and the boats they served in.  There is considerable overlap between the two systems, which is fine.  Better duplicated than none at all.  Plus, if the unimaginable does happen as nearly occured here, the other system is still online.  After all, the battle against the cyber creeps never ends.

If you have not done so, please see that you are logged into BOTH systems, for posterity sake.  First, check to see if your name appears and if not, add it to each system.  www.submarinesailor.com is one, of course, and the other is the USSVI/DECKOG system at www.decklog.com  (If you are a USSVI, NSL or SVWWII member, your record of service is already there.)

These online records are just too valuable to us all to see them destroyed, and I for one am very appreciative of all the hard work that Don Gentry has put into this project.

Don, Ya done good Shipmate. I can't say it any better than the guys have already said, so, THANKS.
I did notice that going to the Links and clicking on Rontinis bbs it doesn't come up. Yeah, I know, I'm to lazy to go around the long way.

Can't begin to exress the right words of the sacrifice you had made over the last 10 years and then in one click of the mouse some idiot trys to destroy what is so valuable to the many families, shpmates, and just curious individuals that visit your site each day.

Having located over 1,000 Sterlet crew over the last five years and knowing the time, sore eyes, and fingers it takes I know what your site took.

I am so glad that you did a recovery of what you could and really it was done very quickly not sure if I have the talent nor knowledge to do it as fast as you did. Great job and we all are pleased you are back as much as you are. I too as Pat H said transferred all my reocrds to Decklog at least this gives me a back up if the same idiot would get my site.

GREAT JOB DON

Don do you have any IP addresses from the attacker...even if they are just proxies? It would be nice to know so everyone can block them.

Don, thanks for all you have done and continue to do.  As Pat said, having somewhere our data can reside is very important. Also important is having this site to talk, listen, and learn from.
